Motorola’s Android 17 update is turning into two different upgrades depending on the phone. The company confirmed on September 22 thatMotorola Qira will reach more devices with Android 17, but only select models in the Signature, Razr and Edge families, and owners of those phones should expect the assistant to appear once their handset has been upgraded. Qira is triggered with the wake word “Hey Qira”, an on-screen entry point or the dedicated AI key on supported devices. Catch me up gathers missed notifications and updates into a single summary, Pay Attention records, transcribes and summarises a meeting with consent, and Next Move surfaces suggestions such as setting a reminder before a flight. On the creative side, Style Sync can turn a photo of an outfit or a pattern into a wallpaper, and the assistant can generate images, stickers and avatars.
The more ambitious part is app access. Through Lenovo’s partnership with Workato, Qira can connect toGmail, Google Calendar, Google Contacts, Slack, Outlook Mail and Outlook Calendar, with Notion and Perplexity integrations also announced, and it can complete supported tasks on a user’s behalf when given permission. Lenovo describes the system as hybrid and local-first, meaning it processes on the device where it can, encrypts the personal data it keeps on the phone, and hands a request to cloud servers, along with the context it needs, only when on-device processing is not enough.
Who Gets the Most Out of Qira
The pitch that separates Qira from Gemini, which still comes preinstalled on Motorola phones, is continuity. Motorola’s own example is a user who saves notes on a phone and then picks up the same plan on a Lenovo PC without retyping anything, and the moto watch ultra has become the first wearable to carry the assistant. Lenovo says Qira already runs on more than 80 PC configurations as well as select tablets and phones, and it currently supports six languages.
That makes Qira most useful to people already inside Lenovo’s ecosystem, whereas for a single-phone owner the daily value comes down to notification summaries, meeting transcription and app connections that overlap with what Gemini already does.
