Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) has spent decades making memory chips. Now, the company believes artificial intelligence could create the greatest opportunity the company has ever seen.

“Super intelligence is creating the most compelling opportunity for Micron in its history,” CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said during the company’s fiscal 2026 fourth-quarter earnings call on Sept 30.

Missed AI’s “Act 1”? Act 2 Could Be 16x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn’t buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our analysts, we’re only at the end of “Act 1″—the R&D phase. “Act 2” is the global rollout.Continue »

That is a bold statement from a company that has survived multiple memory-market booms and busts. But the interesting part isn’t simply that AI needs more memory, but that memory could become a more importantater opportunities to differentiate its products and capture value

Here’s why that matters to investors.

AI needs more than powerful processors

When investors think about AI infrastructure, they tend to focus on graphics processing units (GPUs) and other powerful processors. These chips perform the computationally intensive calculations that allow AI models to train and generate responses.

But those high-end processors need large quantities of data to work on, and they need to be able to access it rapidly. Think of a GPU as a chef working in a busy restaurant. The chef might be exceptionally skilled, but if the ingredients arrive too slowly, the chef stands around waiting, and the whole kitchen slows down. Similarly, a powerful AI processor can sit underutilized if it cannot reliably access the data it needs fast enough.

That’s where memory comes in. High bandwidth memory (HBM) delivers data rapidly to AI processors. Conventional DRAM provides fast access to information while applications run. NAND-based storage holds the enormous data sets, models, and other information that AI systems use. These technologies perform different jobs, but they work together to determine how effectively an AI system operates.

As AI models become more capable and workloads grow, memory capacity, bandwidth, and power efficiency become increasingly important. That will continue to be a huge tailwind for companies like Micron.

Memory could become a competitive differentiator

On the fiscal Q4 earnings call, Micron management explained that AI applications run across competing platforms, whether they use open-aracteristic: Their performance and value depend partly on the capabilities of their memory and storage
