Owners of older Intel-powered Teslas have been left out of Grok since it launched, but that could be changing. A Model 3 owner with root access managed to get Grok running on their car’s Intel Atom infotainment computer by simply flipping a flag, along with Tesla’s full-screen parked vehicle visualization.

The video, originally from @angellvroo and shared on X by @Luckeronisekcz, shows both features running smoothly on the older hardware with what the latter called “surprisingly solid framerates.”

    Update 2026.38 Quietly Added Grok

The owner didn’t have to install Grok from scratch. Tesla builds separate software packages for each vehicle type, and until recently, Intel Model 3 and Model Y builds didn’t include the 2026.38, which started rolling out in late September. The owner simply flipped the feature flag to turn it on

Tesla hacker @greentheonly confirmed the change, noting that “the Intel Model 3 did get them added in 2026.38 so enabling it looks feasible indeed.” However, Model S and Model X vehicles with the same Intel hardware still don’t have the necessary support files for Grok.

    What Intel Owners Are Missing

Grok debuted in Tesla vehicles in the U.S. last year as a conversational chatbot, but it’s been limited to newer cars with AMD Ryzen infotainment computers from launch. Since then, Tesla has added navigation commands, control of vehicle functions like climate and general settings, and location-based reminders, and has brought Grok to most markets worldwide. More is on the way, including FSD commands and text messaging support.

Full-screen parked visualizations are also Ryzen-only. They’ve been around for years and got a quality upgrade with this year’s Spring Update.

    Will Tesla Turn It On?

The Grok files showing up in Intel Model 3 and Model Y builds could mean Tesla is laying the groundwork to bring Grok to some older vehicles, possibly with this year’s Holiday Update. Since Grok runs mostly in the cloud, the Intel chip may be able to handle it.

That isn’t guaranteed, though. The assets for full-screen park visualizations have been sitting on Intel vehicles for a while, and Tesla still hasn’t enabled them. When asked whether Tesla would bring Grok to Intel cars, @greentheonly said “I don’t really know,” and suggested it could be the start of years of compatibility testing, much like the park visualizations.

For now, the only way to get Grok on an Intel Tesla is with root access, and even that won’t work on a Model S or Model X. We’ll be breaking down December’s Holiday Update to see whether Tesla makes it official.
