A NAS is way easier and cheaper than you think, thanks to UGREEN NAS units and a great little Amazon sale.
For years, I went about my day juggling several different external hard drives to offload the obscene number of photos and videos I capture for my job. I thought NAS — that’s Network Attached Storage — were simply too complicated for home use until I used a UGREEN NAS. It completely changed my perspective on the tech, and I guarantee it’ll do the same for you.
UGREEN makes a bunch of different NAS units, all of which are impressively highly rated (only one of 20 on Amazon is rated less than 4.5/5 stars), and around half a dozen of those are between 10-15% off right now:
Don’t get confused by the names. The DH series is meant primarily for home use, while the DX series is meant for either home offices or small offices. The main difference is in storage capacity and capability.
The home-use DH series works as a great way to cut down on all those annoying cloud storage subscription costs and ensure that your data stays in your home instead of some data center. If you’ve got a sizable movie collection, you can also digitize it and turn it into a streaming media server. It’s super cool and a great addition to simply storing all those files that no longer fit on your computer.
Upgrading to a UGREEN NAS DX unit will unlock a wild world of possibilities since they support full containerized apps, thanks to their built-in processors. That includes being able to run your smart home camera feed through them and keep it off the cloud, replacing Google Photos (or another AI-powered photo service) with a locally processed AI version on the NAS, running a private Minecraft server, hosting your own streaming service, and even installing advanced apps like Pi-Hole (here’s a guide) to boost your network privacy.
Yeah, it’s a lot, and it feels like there’s something new every week. If you just want one for your home, choose the DH2300 if you just need an easy way to store extra files. Otherwise, upgrade to the DXP2800 if the idea of running containerized apps and personal servers sounds like your jam.
