Most people probably check their blood pressure only when they visit a clinic or see a blood pressure monitor at home. The problem is that blood pressure can change throughout the day, and a single reading doesn’t always tell the whole story.

That’s where the HUAWEI WATCH D3 comes in.

Instead of carrying a dedicated blood pressure monitor around, HUAWEI has built blood pressure monitoring into what looks and feels much more like a regular smartwatch.

The big feature here is its wrist-based ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), which is designed to track blood pressure over a longer period without being as disruptive as traditional approaches.

It also comes with a broader set of cardiovascular and wellness features, making the WATCH D3 less of a conventional smartwatch with a blood pressure sensor and more of a health-monitoring device that happens to look like one.

    Read on.

The first thing that makes the WATCH D3 interesting is that it doesn’t immediately look like a medical device.

At 11.3mm thick and around 40g without the strap, the D3 has a considerably slimmer and lighter profile than its predecessor, the WATCH D2. HUAWEI says the new model is 17.7% thinner and 8.5% lighter, making it more practical to wear throughout the day.

The design is also more discreet than you’d expect from a watch with a built-in inflatable airbag. The slimmer 25.5mm strap helps maintain a more watch-like appearance.

That matters because one of the biggest advantages of putting this technology into a smartwatch is simply being able to wear it without feeling like you’re walking around with medical equipment strapped to your wrist.

We could wear it to work, while running errands, or outdoors, and no one would immediately think it’s something that can measure our blood pressure. It’s definitely a feat of engineering.

The D3 is available in Black, White, and Gold/Mocha options depending on the market.

    Display and Multimedia

The WATCH D3 comes with a large 1.92-inch AMOLED display with up to 3,000 nits of brightness.

That larger, brighter screen makes it easier to read information at a glance, particularly when you’re outdoors. It also helps make the D3 feel more like a modern smartwatch rather than a specialized medical device.

The display is important here because the watch can surface a lot of health information, from blood pressure readings and trends to other physiological measurements.

Having a relatively large screen means we can check those details directly from our wrist without always reaching for our phone.

    OS, Apps, and UI

The WATCH D3 works with both Android and iOS, while the HUAWEI Health app serves as the main hub for its health and wellness features.

A lot of what makes the D3 different from a conventional smartwatch happens within this ecosystem. The app provides access to blood pressure history, trends, health assessments, and other information collected by the watch.

The D3 also supports smartphone connectivity and notifications, alongside other everyday smartwatch features. There’s also QR payment support through GCash, giving the watch some additional utility beyond its health-focused features.

But realistically, you’re not buying the WATCH D3 primarily for notifications or payments. The software experience is built around making all of the health information collected by the watch easier to understand.

    Smart Health Management Features

Of course, the reason the WATCH D3 exists is the aforementioned blood pressure monitoring.

The watch supports regular blood pressure measurements, pre and post-exercise measurements, and 24-hour ABPM. That means you can use it for a quick check when needed, but also for longer-term monitoring when you want to understand how your blood pressure behaves throughout the day.

The biggest change is its approach to ABPM.

Traditional ambulatory blood pressure monitoring typically takes readings at regular intervals throughout the day and night, which can mean frequent cuff inflation. HUAWEI’s previous WATCH D2, for example, could inflate up to 27 times in a day.

The WATCH D3’s new Minimally Disruptive ABPM study reduces this to four daytime measurements and three nighttime measurements, or seven measurements in total.

The idea is to collect enough information to understand blood pressure patterns while reducing the number of times the watch needs to inflate around our wrists.

The goal isn’t simply to measure blood pressure once and display the result. It’s to build a picture of how our blood pressure changes across different parts of the day.

The process still requires proper positioning. HUAWEI recommends keeping the watch at heart level, keeping our wrist naturally positioned, and staying still and quiet during a measurement.

The appropriate airbag size also matters, with the M strap intended for 13.0–16.0cm wrists and the L strap for 16.1–21.0cm.

So, while the D3 makes the process more convenient, it isn’t completely hands-off. We still need to follow the measurement guidelines if we want meaningful results.

The watch can also take blood pressure measurements before and after exercise. This gives you another way to see how your blood pressure responds to physical activity rather than limiting measurements to when you’re sitting at rest.

HUAWEI says the D3 supports high-accuracy BP measurement performance, with at least 88% of measurements within 10mmHg and at least 97% within 15mmHg of the reference measurements under its stated testing conditions.

There are also measurement reminders for different situations, helping make BP monitoring more of a routine instead of something you remember to do only when you feel like it.

Understanding Your Health, Not Just Collecting Numbers

Blood pressure is only one part of what the WATCH D3 can monitor.

The watch provides a Daily BP Summary and BP trends, while other health features include ECG and PPG measurements, HRV monitoring, sleep-related tracking, emotional wellbeing, and Physical Readiness.

HUAWEI also includes Health Glance, which brings multiple health indicators together so we can get a broader overview instead of jumping between individual measurements within the interface.

Just like the WATCH GT 7 series, the D3 also supports the Coronary Heart Disease Risk Study and Diabetes Risk Study. These are particularly relevant for users who want to be more proactive about their health, but they need to be understood for what they actually do.

For the Diabetes Risk Study, the watch collects physiological information while you’re in different states, including sleep and rest, over a period of three to 14 days. It then assesses your current and future risk of hyperglycemia.

It’s important to clarify that it does not directly measure blood glucose levels.

In simpler terms, the watch uses its heart-rate sensor to capture blood-flow signals from your wrist, then uses AI to look for patterns that may be associated with diabetes risk.

The resulting assessment is a screening tool, not a diagnosis, and proper blood tests and a doctor are still needed for confirmation. That’s an important distinction because health wearables can provide useful information, but they shouldn’t be treated as a substitute for clinical assessment.

The same philosophy applies to the D3’s cardiovascular tools. ECG and Pulse Wave Arrhythmia Analysis can provide additional information about heart rhythm, while Arterial Stiffness Assessment is designed to provide insights into vascular stiffness and signs of vascular aging.

The result is a watch that doesn’t just collect a list of numbers. HUAWEI is trying to put those numbers into context through summaries, trends, assessments, and recommendations.

Health Monitoring for Yourself and Family

One of the more interesting additions is the On-Wrist Health Community.

The idea is simple: your health doesn’t always concern just you. Through HUAWEI Health, users can share selected health information with family members and receive alerts when important health exceptions are detected.

This can be useful for families keeping an eye on older family members.

Instead of relying entirely on a phone call to ask whether someone has checked their blood pressure or how they’re feeling, selected health information can be shown through the app.

The D3 can also provide alerts for abnormal conditions and allow users to check on loved ones with a tap. Of course, this isn’t a replacement for actually checking in with your family. But as an additional layer of awareness, it makes sense.

    Fitness and Workout Modes

Although blood pressure is clearly the star of the WATCH D3, HUAWEI hasn’t made it a one-trick pony. The D3 supports 100+ workout modes, covering everything from everyday activities to more elite sports such as golf.

There’s also Physical Readiness, which combines information from recovery, HRV, sleep, activity, emotional wellbeing, and other physiological signals into a single score.

The goal is to make it easier to understand whether you’re ready for another workout or whether your body could use some additional recovery.

The HUAWEI Health app expands this further with AI-powered wellness features such as personalized workout courses, weight-management plans, AI Sleep Music, and guided training programs.

This is where the D3’s broader health-management approach becomes more apparent. It’s not simply recording how many steps you’ve taken or how long you’ve exercised. It’s also trying to provide some context around your recovery and overall readiness.

    Battery Life

The WATCH D3 is designed to be worn throughout the day and night, which is particularly important considering how much of its health monitoring happens outside of a single workout.

HUAWEI rates the D3 for up to six days of battery life, with 24-hour ABPM enabled it lasts up to a day. Actual endurance will naturally depend on how heavily you use the health-monitoring features, workouts, notifications, and display.

The longer battery life is useful for a watch focused on continuous health monitoring. After all, there’s not much point in tracking your sleep or longer-term health trends if you’re constantly taking the watch off to charge it.

    Conclusion

The HUAWEI WATCH D3 is interesting because it takes something that normally feels like a medical routine and puts it into something you can wear everyday.

Its biggest selling point is still the blood pressure monitoring. More specifically, the new wrist-based ABPM approach makes long-term monitoring less disruptive by reducing the scheduled measurements to four during the day and three at night.

But the D3 doesn’t stop there. ECG, PPG, HRV, sleep and emotional wellbeing tracking, Physical Readiness, cardiovascular and diabetes risk studies, and the On-Wrist Health Community give it a much broader health-management role.

At the same time, it still looks and behaves enough like a smartwatch to fit into everyday life. The slimmer body, 1.92-inch AMOLED display, 3,000-nit brightness, 100+ sports modes, smartphone connectivity, and everyday features help keep it from feeling like a medical device strapped to your wrist.

Ultimately, that’s what makes the WATCH D3 compelling.
