Anthropic, CEO of which called for slowing AI development, may release new model ahead of IPO
Anthropic is reportedly weighing the release of a new artificial intelligence (AI) model to counter the rising momentum of rival OpenAI’s newly deployed GPT-6 Astra, a report has said, citing three people familiar with internal discussions. The potential rollout comes ahead of an anticipated initial public offering (IPO) and arrives two weeks after Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei released a 3,800-word essay urging the global AI ecosystem to curb the speed of frontier model releases out of concern for systemic safety risks.As per a report by news agency Reuters, the internal push to deploy a countermeasure highlights the fierce commercial rivalry between the two frontier developers. Amodei warned of dark scenarios involving swarms of autonomous AI agents hacking websites without human oversight. This stance received public backing from OpenAI chief Sam Altman and SpaceX head Elon Musk.Now, Anthropic finds itself balancing those cautionary declarations against intense market pressure, with internal teams evaluating the safety benchmarks of its next system while deliberating whether to greenlight a launch, the report noted.
OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra shakes up enterprise spending
OpenAI rolled out GPT-6 Astra on September 3, highlighting significant leaps in autonomous computer use, coding, professional workplace tools and cybersecurity. The launch has reportedly seen rapid adoption across corporate clients. Data tracked by corporate expense platform Ramp shows GPT-6 Astra capturing approximately 13% of monitored enterprise AI expenditures, compared to roughly 8% for Anthropic’s Claude Fable.Despite OpenAI’s recent gains, several current backers and funds preparing to invest in both upcoming IPOs argue that Astra does not present an existential threat to Anthropic. Analysts point to the considerable time it takes for corporate clients to rip out and replace entrenched software vendors.Furthermore, Anthropic’s annualised revenue run rate climbed past $65 billion by late July, surging from approximately $9 billion at the close of 2025. In comparison, OpenAI’s annualised revenue run rate crossed $40 billion in July.Beyond its direct duel with OpenAI, Anthropic faces broader structural challenges across the industry. For example, the rapid rise of open-source and open-weight alternatives from China gives businesses cheaper pathways to build internal infrastructure without paying premium token fees to proprietary providers.Major customers are also looking inward. Meta Platforms, historically one of Anthropic’s top enterprise accounts, is actively looking to scale back its reliance on Claude systems as it expands its own internal computing models.
