Leaders and experts in the artificial intelligence field will meet in Durham on Friday to address concerns of how dangerous AI could be to mankind.

The third annual Cybersecurity at Duke Conference on Duke’s campus will feature a discussion on “the rapid deployment of autonomous AI systems across enterprise security operations and the questions that it raises.”

The 9:15 a.m. event is not open to the public.

The conference comes at a tense time in the ongoing conversation about AI dangers, many which were brought up by leaders in the industry.

Jacob Coxon, a former researcher for Claude AI, an AI assistant built by developer Anthropic AI, set off a wave of concerns when he posted to social media, estimating a 10% chance of AI causing human extinction within the next decade.

Anthropic’s CEO on Saturday then called for the AI industry to slow down its speed of development over safety concerns.

Democratic Congresswomen Valerie Foushee and Deborah Ross will be at Friday’s conference to speak about the role legislation could play in safeguarding cybersecurity systems against AI.

Trump administration-appointed National Security Agency Deputy Director Tim Kosiba will also speak, focusing on how adversaries could weaponize AI.

President Donald Trump has pushed back on fears around AI, calling them a hoax on social media and touting AI as an important economic engine.
