Apple’s next entry-level iPhone is shaping up as a focused performance update rather than a radical redesign. Expected in spring 2027 alongside the standard iPhone 18 and a second-generation iPhone Air, the iPhone 18e will arrive months after the September 2026 launch of the iPhone 18 Pro models and the foldable iPhone Duo.
Leakers and analysts describe it as closely related to the current iPhone 17e, with the biggest gains coming from new silicon and a modest memory increase.
Performance: The A20 Chip and More memory
The clearest upgrade is the A20 chip, built on a 2nm process. This marks a generational step up from the 3nm A19 in the iPhone 17e. The A20 is expected to deliver better speed, improved efficiency, and stronger support for Apple Intelligence features in iOS 27.
Supply-chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reported that both the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e will use this A20 and ship with 9GB of memory — up from 8GB in the current lower-end models. The configuration is described as six 1.5GB dies rather than the previous four 2GB dies. The extra memory is aimed at smoother on-device AI tasks as Apple integrates Apple Intelligence more deeply into the operating system.
Some reports suggest the iPhone 18 and 18e may share the same A20 variant or manufacturing processes, with any differences limited to minor GPU core counts, similar to how the iPhone 17e used a slightly cut-down version of the A19.
Display and Design: Familiar Territory
The screen is expected to remain a roughly 6.1- to 6.12-inch LTPS OLED panel with a 60Hz refresh rate. That means no ProMotion, no Always-On display, and the same limitations as the iPhone 16e and 17e. Higher-end iPhone 18 models are tipped for 120Hz LTPO panels, continuing Apple’s practice of reserving smoother displays for more expensive phones.
Design-wise, the 18e is expected to look very much like its predecessor: aluminum frame, glass back, Ceramic Shield front, and the traditional notch rather than Dynamic Island. Recent leaks indicate the chip is currently the only confirmed major change, with few other significant updates anticipated. The phone will likely retain MagSafe, USB-C, and IP68 water resistance.
The rear camera is tipped to stay a single 48MP sensor, matching the iPhone 17e’s Fusion-style main camera that enables optical-quality 2x zoom possible upgrade from the current 12MP TrueDepth camera to 24MP. That claim is less certain than the chip and display details, but a higher-resolution selfie camera would improve detail in photos and video calls
No official pricing has leaked. The iPhone 17e launched at $599 for 256GB in March 2026 before Apple raised it to $699 in September. Some observers expect the 18e to start around $699 amid broader component cost pressures, while others still project a $599 entry point to maintain the model’s “affordable” positioning relative to the standard iPhone 18.
MacDailyNews Take:In a nutshell, the iPhone 18e is positioned as a long-lasting, efficient daily driver with modern AI capabilities and solid battery life potential from the more efficient 2nm chip. Buyers who prioritize a high-refresh-rate screen, multiple rear cameras, or Dynamic Island will likely need to step up to other models in the lineup. Everything remains based on leaks and analyst reports as of November 2026; Apple has not officially confirmed the device or its specifications.
