Tim Cook visited Apple’s Battersea campus in London this week, mingling with King Charles as part of the company’s new partnership with The King’s Trust.
At Apple’s Battersea headquarters, Cook also sat down with The Independent for an in-depth interview on the partnership and his first month as Apple’s executive chairman.
Cook stepped down as Apple CEO last month, passing the torch to John Ternus. In this week’s interview, Cook outlined that the transition “actually started years ago.”
“It’s been an interesting transition. We really set out to have the best transition ever, a textbook example that people could look back to and learn from. It actually started years ago. Obviously, these things are not quick things and I feel so great about how things are going I think everything has gone sort of exactly the way I had envisioned it. And it feels fantastic. Because Apple deserved the best.”
Ternus’s tenure as CEO began with the launch of the iPhone Duo, which Cook said was fully planned. “I wanted John to have some wind at his back,” Cook explained. “And the wind at Apple is very much based on the product cycle.”
Cook also emphasized that he’s focused on “worldwide policy” as Apple’s executive chairman, noting the “incredible level of trust” between him and Ternus. While Cook is helping Ternus in “any way he sees fit,” he makes it clear he’s “not meddling.”
“First of all, John and I have an incredible level of trust in each other. The relationship must be based on trust, and the communication must be frequent and significant. But other than that, what I’m focused on right now is worldwide policy. And the interface with governments around the world matters because there are lots of things where we’re trying to advance or advocate for change. There’s a significant amount of work in that, and I’m doing that and helping John in any way he sees fit. I’m not meddling. I’m not a meddler.”
What kind of advice has Cook given Ternus? “Don’t mimic me.” You can read the full interview over at The Independent. It includes a great discussion on Apple’s new partnership with The King’s Trust.
