TextNow has surpassed $1 billion in cumulative revenue after more than 16 years of largely self-funded growth, marking a major milestone for the app-based phone service company.

Founded in 2009, TextNow has reached the milestone without venture capital, institutional backing or follow-on financing beyond an initial $1.5 million seed round.

The company said it remains profitable and independent, having expanded primarily through customer adoption and internally generated revenue rather than repeated capital raises.

TextNow provides phone service through an app, combining free nationwide talk and text with optional mobile data that users can purchase by the day, week or month.

The company serves millions of consumers across North America and has built its business around offering a more flexible alternative to conventional wireless plans.

Customers can select a phone number, activate service in minutes and use nationwide 5G for talk and text without paying a recurring fee. Users who need mobile data can add it when needed and change their service without long-term commitments or cancellation fees.

That model is designed for consumers who may not need or want a traditional monthly wireless subscription.

TextNow’s $1 billion milestone represents cumulative revenue generated since the company was founded rather than annual revenue.

Still, the achievement highlights an unusual growth path within the technology sector.

Many consumer technology companies pursue repeated venture capital rounds to finance customer acquisition, product development and geographic expansion before reaching profitability.

TextNow instead largely relied on revenue generated by its own operations.

The company said that approach has allowed it to remain profitable while retaining greater control over product development, corporate strategy and how aggressively it expands.

TextNow was founded by Derek Ting and has developed from a messaging application into a broader mobile communications service.

Its proposition centers on reducing the fixed cost traditionally associated with maintaining a mobile phone number.

Rather than requiring customers to purchase a standard wireless plan containing a predetermined amount of data, TextNow provides basic calling and messaging service and allows customers to add paid data as needed.

That can be particularly useful for customers who spend significant amounts of time connected to Wi-Fi or whose mobile data usage varies considerably from month to month.

The company has positioned flexibility as an important part of its differentiation.

A customer can add data for a short period rather than committing to a full monthly plan, potentially giving users greater control over their wireless spending.

TextNow’s app-based delivery model also reduces some of the infrastructure and distribution requirements associated with traditional wireless carriers.

The company’s ability to reach $1 billion in cumulative revenue without significant outside investment also reflects the benefits of maintaining a large consumer service over an extended period.

Rather than focusing entirely on rapid expansion funded by external capital, TextNow has emphasized building a product that users continue returning to.

CEO and Co-Founder Derek Ting said the milestone demonstrates that technology companies do not necessarily need to follow the dominant venture-backed growth model to reach substantial scale.

The company is now using the milestone to highlight its connection with Waterloo, Ontario, where TextNow was built and where it maintains a significant presence.

During Waterloo Tech Week, TextNow plans to unveil a permanent public sculpture in Waterloo’s Research and Technology Park.

The installation is intended to commemorate the company’s growth while recognizing the role Waterloo’s technology community played in its development.

Employees, local technology leaders and members of the community are expected to participate in the unveiling.

TextNow sees the sculpture as both a marker of its own history and a message to other founders that companies can pursue alternative paths to scale.

The milestone also follows the launch of TextNow’s first major national brand campaign, “Way Too Smart to Pay Dumb,” featuring comedian and entrepreneur Katt Williams.

The campaign is built around the company’s broader argument that consumers should have more control over what they pay for mobile service.

TextNow views the campaign as an extension of the philosophy that has guided the company since its founding: challenging conventional wireless pricing and giving customers more flexibility.

The company is entering its next phase with a larger national marketing presence while maintaining the independent operating model that helped it reach the $1 billion revenue threshold.

For TextNow, the milestone is as much about how the company reached that scale as the revenue figure itself.

The company is using its growth to make the case that consumer technology businesses can build large operations through product adoption, profitability and reinvestment rather than depending on repeated institutional financing.

More than 16 years after its founding, TextNow remains focused on expanding an app-based wireless model that lets consumers decide when and how much they want to pay for mobile data while retaining free access to core calling and messaging services.

“This milestone is less about the number and more about what it represents. There is a belief that reaching this level requires outside funding and a specific growth model. We have shown there is another way. It can be earned by building something people choose to use over time.”
