A group comprising of a Temple University associate professor, a former Temple men’s soccer player, and former volleyball player have co-developed a new app that aims to help student-athletes, writes Nick Kariuki for Billy Penn at WHYY.
A virtual mentor named Sam is the face of an AI-powered mentorship app, JournAI, that was created to support the holistic development and well-being of student-athletes.
The Temple researchers recently received a new grant to help launch the app.
“I thought it had a really great chance because it’s incredibly innovative, it’s very unique,” said Elizabeth Taylor, an associate professor at Temple University’s School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management. “Not a lot of folks are using AI in this way.”
This was the third time that Taylor applied for the grant. However, it was the first time she incorporated AI into the proposal.
Through the JournAI app, student-athletes can text with Sam and chat about a number of different topics. This can vary from mental health support to career planning, and everything in between when it comes to off-the-field matters college students may face.
The goal is to prepare their student-athletes for life after college, especially given the few college athletes who don’t go on to become professional athletes.
