During a financial results briefing today, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa spoke a bit about mobile apps.
The big takeaway here is that across the company’s different apps, cumulative downloads are now at over 980 million. That’s with titles being made available in 164 countries and regions.
Furukawa said the following about Nintendo’s mobile apps:
“Mobile apps are an important touchpoint for consumers around the world to become familiar with Nintendo IP.
To date, we have offered our services in 164 countries and regions, including places that cannot be easily reached through our dedicated video game business. The number of cumulative downloads of our gaming apps exceeds 980 million.
Through smartphones, which are a part of everyday life, we are creating opportunities for consumers, including those in places with limited previous exposure to Nintendo, to become familiar with Nintendo characters and the play experiences we offer.”
Some Nintendo apps have come and gone over the years. Most recently, Mario Kart Tour was shut down at the end of September.
Super Mario Run kicked off Nintendo’s mobile initiative in 2016. However, the 2017 game Fire Emblem Heroes has been the most successful app for the company in terms of revenue.
