While the Switch 2 offers a ton of games, the situation’s quite different when it comes to streaming apps. The Switch didn’t have a huge amount of streaming apps, but there were certainly a few to choose from. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said of Switch 2, and today brings us news of yet another streaming service that won’t be joining the platform.

NicoNico is a popular streaming service in Japan, and it basically provides an experience similar to YouTube. The team behind NicoNico put out an app on the original Switch years ago, but the service will be sunset March 31st, 2027. Many expected the Switch version was being shut down to pave the way for a Switch 2 app, but that’s sadly not the case.

NicoNico shared a message about the upcoming discontinuation of the Switch app, and it happened to include a note on Switch 2. The company has stated that “in light of the service development policies and various requirements,” on Switch 2, they will not be releasing an app. Along with that, a NicoNico executive stated that releasing a Switch 2 app isn’t something they can “do on their own.” (h/t OatmealDome)

With literally zero streaming apps on Switch 2, you have to wonder if Nintendo has changed requirements to make it all but impossible for video platforms to build apps. Following this statement from NicoNico, it seems all the more likely Nintendo has added quite a few hoops for streaming services to jump through if they want to support Switch 2.
