Someone wearing Ray-Ban Meta glasses starts a video with the white capture LED glowing visibly, satisfying the system’s check. Then a finger slides over it. Recording continues. Nobody nearby knows a thing.
That workaround is now gone. Meta VP Alex Himel confirmed in a Threads post that a fix is rolling out across Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta, and Meta AI glasses. “The camera won’t start recording if the LED is blocked,” Himel wrote, “but some people try to bypass this by starting a recording and then covering it up. A fix for this is starting to roll out — the camera will now stop working if the light is covered during a recording.”
For normal users with unmodified glasses, the practical impact is minor. Accidentally brush the LED while adjusting your frames, and recording stops. For anyone running a “start-then-hide” move on purpose, the trick is finished.
Here’s how Meta’s privacy crackdown has layered in over time:

Android Central put it plainly: protections against something as obvious as covering a recording light “should have been built into these glasses from the beginning.” That’s a fair read of the timeline.
Google Glasscollapsed partly because the public never trusted it. Meta has spent years trying to avoid that same fate, and these updates represent real, measurable progress. Meta says several businesses offering LED-disabling services have shut down, and accounts promoting those modifications have reportedly been removed from its platforms.
But the pattern here is reactive. Each fix arrives after someone finds the exploit, not before. Meta says more updates are coming, with Himel promising the LED will “reliably alert bystanders” going forward.
The hardware fix works. Whether Meta can design privacy in from day one on its next product — rather than patch it in after the press arrives — that’s still the thing worth watching.
