9to5Mac is brought to you by CleanMyMac by MacPaw. With the release of macOS 27 Golden Gate, use CleanMyMac first to free up space, optimize your system, and ensure your new Mac runs at 100% on day one. Learn more.

macOS 27 Golden Gate doesn’t give the Photos app a dramatic redesign. Instead, Photos gains a surprisingly broad set of various improvements this year. These range from Apple <a href="https://myappsplus.com/nebraskans-wary-of-risks-surrounding-artificial-intelligence/” title=”Nebraskans wary of risks surrounding artificial intelligence”>Intelligence-powered editing, new ways to organize and sort your collection, better sharing tools, and much more.

    More powerful Apple Intelligence editing

The flashiest updates to the Photos app in macOS 27 Golden Gate live in a new Tools pane. They require Apple Intelligence on a compatible Mac.

Clean Up gets a significant quality boost. Apple says it can now handle larger objects and more complex scenes with more realistic results.

Separately, a fast mode is intended for small blemishes, while high quality mode tackles more intricate edits not possible before.

The new Extend tool uses generative models to expand an image beyond its original edges.

That can help when straightening a horizon, changing an aspect ratio, or simply creating more space around a subject. Extend is also available from the Crop tool.

    Then there’s Spatial Reframing.

First, Photos builds a 3D view of a scene using on-device spatial models. This lets you rotate around a subject, pan, or zoom to change the apparent camera position.

When the new perspective exposes gaps, image models generate the missing areas.

In macOS 27, iCloud Shared Albums finally support full-resolution sharing and all common photo and video formats.

They’re also becoming much friendlier to people outside the Apple ecosystem. Friends using Android or Windows can join a Shared Album and contribute their own photos through iCloud.com.

Apple is also addressing some everyday friction. You can save every photo from a Shared Album to your personal library with a single click.

For albums that do not need to live forever, there is a new option to have them expire after 30 days.

Slideshows, ratings, and a new collection

Next, Photos is bringing back more control over slideshows. You can turn any selection of photos and videos into a slideshow, then customize its slide duration, transition style, and music.

After that, the finished slideshow can be saved as a video file in your photo library. That makes it much easier to replay or share the presentation without making it again each time.

Additionally, a new Captured by Me collection gathers photos you took with the Camera app, including shots captured on previous devices. The same criteria can also be used as a filter elsewhere in your library.

And photographers who want another way to organize their work, Photos adds one-to-five-star ratings. Ratings can then be used to filter the main library and collections. Just be sure to enable star ratings in Photos app settings as it’s off by default.

Lastly, two less visible changes could make Photos feel better in daily use.

macOS 27 lets you prioritize iCloud Photos syncing so new photos and videos begin uploading sooner.

This sounds especially useful when you’ve just imported a large batch and want it available on your other devices without waiting for lower-priority work.

Apple has also rebuilt the search foundation used by Spotlight, Photos, and Mail. Apple says the new system creates a more comprehensive index of your content and keeps it updated throughout the day, so that can only be positive.

macOS 27 Golden Gate improves how you share, organize, find, sync, present, and edit your photos. Together, these changes make for a more meaningful year for the app for regular Photos app users.
