In the realm of home tech products, I like stuff that adds something to the space, whether it’s through its design, added functionality, or its intended function. That being said, air purifiers tend to stick out like a sore thumb in a room and may hum noticeably if you are or aren’t paying attention. A good hallmark of tech for the home is how well it integrates into your living space, and I think LG has something unique here.

Bring forth what I’d like to call a chic air purifier. Definitely not just another random box that you chuck in the corner of your room and hide away from the rest of the world; this air purifier’s got a hint of style and substance to it. Trying to be a piece of furniture more than just another gadget, this is the LG PuriCare AeroMini Air Purifier in mint.

    Design and Features

Up to this point, most air purifiers I’ve seen are boring white boxes with holes. At this point, they’ve stuck out like a sore thumb, especially in a white form factor. The LG PuriCare AeroMini does away with the boxy design and goes full-on cylindrical. That design choice alone is already enough to set it apart from the rest of the dozens of white boxes out in the market today. Plus, when you factor in the color options, it can either blend in or stick out depending on what color your room is.

On top of that, it also comes with accessories in the form of a leather loop, a vase, and my personal favorite, a tabletop. While its main task is to purify the air, with these attachments, it can double as an extremely heavy bracelet (kidding), a side table, or a decor holder. While I’m not sold on it being a bracelet (really, I am not), the vase attachment is just big and long enough for a small flower arrangement, but the corner table does come in handy for holding stuff. It’s made of metal, but don’t expect it to hold up heavy items, though, because it’s still attached to an air purifier, in case you forgot.

On its own, you might even think this is some sort of high-end Bluetooth speaker, and nothing really stands out to announce, “I’m an air purifier.” Overall, LG has definitely caught my eye on this one.

    Performance

LG claims that it can clear the air of a room as big as 27 square meters, which is perfect for studio apartments and small bedrooms. If your target room’s square footage is any bigger than 27 square meters, then I recommend that you get perhaps the AeroHit, which covers 32 square meters, or the Puricare 360, which covers 62 square meters. However, the “Mini” form factor means that there are fewer features. The AeroMini is simply an air purifier, with no ionizer or humidifier to speak of. I don’t personally put a lot of importance on the ionizer or humidifier, but if those two features matter to you, then look elsewhere.

Still, I think it’s actually impressive that LG was able to cover as much as 27 square meters in a body that’s more compact compared to the AeroHit. According to the brand’s website, it has a clean air delivery rate of 210 cubic meters per hour, brought to us via a brushless motor. The result is an efficient and quiet air purifier that’s more capable than its size suggests. It’s only 1 mm wider and 140mm shorter than the AeroHit if you don’t count the table or the vase. The AeroMini is also much lighter than the AeroHit, coming in at just 2.8 kilograms compared to 4.2 kilograms, so if you ever need to interact with the unit, it’s less heavy lifting.

In practice, I barely notice the unit. In fact, the fan is so unintrusive that I only get to hear it whenever I stick my nose up the top to get a breath of fresh air in its auto mode. You can definitely turn up the fan speed, and then it gets loud and annoying, but when it’s just going through the motions and there isn’t a big spike in air quality, the AeroMini is whisper-quiet, which is a way of me saying that I’d recommend it for bedrooms and just leave it on the whole night.

    Ease of Use

Unboxing and setup were easy enough. You do need a few extra steps to install the accessories, but that’s beside the point. In the box, you get the unit, a power supply, and a filter to get started. The base has a simple twist-on and twist-off door at the bottom to access the filter chamber. From there, it’s just a matter of installing the filter correctly and turning the unit on. Just touch the power button, and it defaults to auto mode. After that, you can leave it, and it will just do its job. Simple as can be, but if you’re someone who wants a little more control, then LG has the ThinQ app, which allows a more customizable experience in case you want more out of the product.

Moreover, the filter supplied is LG’s proprietary Aero Series HEPA filter, graded H13, and it’s also the same one used in the LG AeroHit. This filter uses three layers and removes 99.999% of ultra-fine dust particles, as well as 99.8% of bacteria, 98.5% of viruses, and 99.9% of airborne mold.

LG claims that the filter can last about 12 months (one year) with 10 hours of use every day. The filter life is on the longer end of the spectrum, but if you don’t always have the filter on all day, it might even last longer. When it is time for a replacement, the AeroMini is also capable of beaming a notification to your phone or the unit itself to tell you that it’s time to buy a new filter.

    Features

To get deeper into what the model can do, you have to download the LG ThinQ app on your Android or Apple device and turn on the WiFi on your air purifier by holding the power button. From there, just follow the on-screen instructions, scan the QR code on the unit’s sticker to pair, and connect it to your home WiFi network. Once set up, you get access to some of the deeper features that LG has baked into the AeroMini. Some of the features include a remote control function, air quality monitoring, and operation scheduling.

The air quality monitor gives you a deeper look into what the sensors are picking up. The AeroMini can detect particulate matter (PM) that’s 1.0, 2.5, and 10 microns in aerodynamic diameter. Each one of these corresponds to a certain air pollutant, so if you want to nerd out about your room’s air quality, a quick Google search will reveal what those numbers correspond to. Through the app, you can pick out what size the AeroMini is filtering out at the moment, and you can even receive notifications when there are spikes.

More importantly, if you want to save electricity while you’re gone or program the unit to clean the air for you just in time for you to get home, you can do that through the ThinQ app. You can do all of this, including turning the unit on or off through your phone, provided that your home WiFi network is working.

Conclusion: A Smart Way to Clear the Air in a Mini Form Factor

At the time of writing, LG is selling the PuriCare AeroMini for a price of P9,495, down from a suggested retail price of P12,999. It’s also labeled as an online exclusive and comes with FREE accessories, just so you know.

However, the biggest issue the LG PuriCare AeroMini faces is stiff, more affordable competition. Brands from China like Xiaomi, Huawei, and realme, to name a few, are offering a ton of value at a fraction of the cost of the LG PuriCare AeroMini. The thing is, it’s quite expensive for not a lot of coverage area, and 27 square meters is on the small end of the spectrum. For the same price, if not less, you also don’t get humidifier and ionizer functions, which may turn away a few buyers looking to get the most features out of their hard-earned Peso.

Otherwise, everything is on the premium end of the spectrum. Whereas other brands are going for a simple white box most of the time, LG chose to pay its design department and turn an air purifier into a piece of livable furniture rather than an air-cleaning robot. While the lack of additional features is a bummer, it clears the air well, shows you specific metrics of how clean your air is through the app, and its filter lasts a long time. At the time of writing, I couldn’t find an official LG filter online. Checking Shopee, however, a replacement-quality three-layer filter goes for around P1,799, but I do imagine that the official replacement will be around the same price, if not more.

So, who is the LG PuriCare AeroMini for? If you live in a condo or sleep in a room that has less than 27 square meters of floor area and don’t want a white box in the corner of your room doing nothing but ruining your view, then the AeroMini should definitely be on your radar.
