Just a week ago, I was caught in a frenzy. As the doors opened to the <a href="https://myappsplus.com/whatsapp-may-soon-let-iphone-users-add-a-third-account/” title=”WhatsApp may soon let iPhone users add a third account”>iPhone demo room after Apple’s Surprise and Shine keynote, I couldn’t help but pause as dozens of journalists and media members rushed to get the very first hands-on photos of the iPhone Duo. A device of such aura, as my little cousin would say, demands attention.

So, I went the other way and got my hands on the also-new iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max instead. In a market dominated by headlines about price hikes and memory shortages, it’s these familiar models, like the Pro series, that may have more sticking power with people. But will the masses bite?
After a good hour admiring the new design, toying with the enhanced Siri features, and dialing between different apertures, a camera capability Apple has surely put a good chunk of its marketing spend toward, I left with a takeaway I wasn’t expecting.
For the first time in a long time, I’ll be recommending the smaller Pro variant over the Pro Max, and it’s not just because of the size difference.
Absolute feature parity
Shortly after last week’s keynote, I visited Apple’s Visitor Center just outside the Park. It’s basically the fanciest Apple store you’ll ever see, with merchandise and products available on one side, and a sit-down cafe on the other.
While there, I had a few conversations with visitors about the newly announced iPhones. One thing that really struck me was the belief that the Pro Max model always has the better camera and performance. That’s true, if it were two years ago.

Today, aside from differences in screen and battery sizes, both the Pro and Pro Max variants are nearly identical in features and capabilities. The triple-camera systems — with variable aperture functionality — are the same, the phones’ durability is the same, and the iOS 27 software they run on is the same.
This year is also the first time Apple is offering a 2TB configuration for the smaller Pro model, making it as large as the Pro Max for content creators, photographers, and people who want more internal storage.
Ergonomics that make more sense
I often hear about people who find it hard or awkward to interact with the iPhone’s Camera Control and Action button; guess what iPhone model they’re typically using?
With the number of buttons and keys Apple has added to the iPhone over the years, good ergonomics is more important than ever. The iPhone 18 Pro, with its 6.3-inch display, feels like the right size to use those hardware features.

When held one-handed, you can still press and swipe the Camera Control to adjust settings on the fly, whereas the iPhone 18 Pro Max can be top-heavy, making one-handed capture a balancing act.
You should also know that the iPhone 18 Pro Max weighs 249 grams this year, up from last year’s 233 grams, making it one of the heaviest iPhones to date. That weight’s before you throw on a protective case.
Let’s not ignore the battery numbers
One specification during the Apple keynote surprised me: the iPhone 18 Pro’s rated battery life. According to Apple, the smaller iPhone model can last up to 34 hours of video playback (or up to 36 hours on eSIM-only variants).

While that’s less than the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s 43 to 45-hour rating, it puts the iPhone 18 Pro ahead of most older Pro Max models, including the 16 and 15. I’ll repeat: this year’s Pro is a smaller iPhone with the battery life of a Pro Max.

Bottom line
While further testing is required to see exactly where the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max stand this year, I’ve already decided to put my money down for the smaller model — not only because it’s better designed to take advantage of the features Apple has to offer, but because it’s no longer a device that feels like you’re settling.
Based on what I’m seeing with local inventory and delivery windows, you might even have a better chance of scoring your desired color and storage tier for the iPhone 18 Pro in the early weeks than the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
