iOS 27 Running Hot on Your iPhone? Here’s Why & How to Fix It

If you installed iOS 27 at some point recently, and your iPhone has been running hotter than usual, perhaps even with what perceived degradation in performance, and reduction in battery life, you’re certainly not alone. While this can be a frustrating experience, it’s often associated with installing the update itself, and the good news is that it’s almost certainly temporary. Some iPhone users have also reported seeing temperature warnings on their device after installing iOS 27, whether it’s the full standard temperature warning where the iPhone is completely unusable, or a softer temperature warning like one that stalls iCloud and warns the user “Syncing with iCloud is paused. This iPhone needs to cool down.”

Why is iPhone running hotter after installing iOS 27?
It is not unusual for iPhone users to notice their iPhone feels hot, slow, and a quicker battery drain, after installing system software updates, and iOS 27 is no different. Apple even specifically advises about this on a support page, that users may notice temporary impacts on battery life and thermal performance due to background activity involved in completing the setup of iOS 27. This includes tasks like indexing data on the device for Spotlight and Photos search, and other tasks associated with Spotlight, search, indexing, and Siri. The process of indexing your messages, notes, photos, files, emails, apps, and everything else, can take several days to complete.
It is all of this background activity that causes the iPhone to run hotter than usual, as well as drain the battery, and reduce system performance.
How to I fix my overheating slow iPhone with iOS 27?
The goal for most users is to return their iPhone to a normal temperature state, with regular performance, and normal battery life. This is typically accomplished by doing the following:
- Do nothing, wait it out – this is the primary solution to this problem. Simply leave your iPhone plugged into a power source, especially overnight and when not in use, and let the entire indexing process run its course. Be sure your iPhone is on wi-fi during this process. Doing nothing usually resolves the heat and performance issues within a few days, depending on the amount of stuff you have on your iPhone
- Update your apps – it’s possible a third party app is causing the performance issues, so update all of your apps just in case
- Wearing a case? Remove it – some iPhone cases serve as insulators and with poor air flow can smother the iPhone causing it to trap heat
- Install additional iOS updates as they become available
For the vast majority of iPhone users, simply doing nothing but plugging their iPhone in, connected to wi-fi, over several days (nights are obviously easiest), and the overheating, sluggish, battery draining, performance issue will resolve itself on it’s own.
Let iOS 27 do its job
The thing to remember is that iOS 27 has to do a lot of behind the scenes housekeeping to get all of the features dialed in, with your data properly indexed. Plug your iPhone in overnight over the course of a few days to a week, and everything should settle down and return back to normal, and probably even faster than it was before due to improvements in iOS 27.
