THE BRONX, New York (WABC) –With gas prices at their highest level since May 2022, drivers looking to save money at the pump may be able to lower their costs by taking advantage of rewards programs, membership discounts and credit card perks.
Gas customers who spoke with 7 On Your Side’s Nina Pineda said they typically fill up wherever prices are a few cents lower, but many were unaware of additional ways to save on each gallon purchased.
“Using apps and loyalty programs to get lower prices on gas is actually one of the best ways to save money, because it’s pretty easy to do,” said Kim Palmer of NerdWallet.
She said some of the easiest savings tools are available through mobile apps.
One option is Earnify, the BP and Amoco rewards app. Palmer said Amazon Prime members who link their accounts can receive a 10-cent-per-gallon discount.
Users can enter their phone number before pumping, and the discount is applied directly to the price per gallon.
“Then you’re often getting that immediate discount, and you don’t have to wait,” Palmer said.
Walmart+ members can also receive a 10-cent-per-gallon discount at Walmart, Citgo and ExxonMobil gas stations.
The savings can be accessed through the store’s app by selecting services and then navigating to gas savings. Costco and Sam’s Club members may also find lower fuel prices through their memberships.
“Even if you’re saving a small amount per gallon, it will add up over the course of a month, and you’ll really feel the effect of those savings,” Palmer said.
Drivers may also want to review their credit card rewards categories. Some cards offer 3% to 6% cash back on gas purchases.
Bank of America offers 6% cash back on gas for the first year, while Discover offers 5%.
7 On Your Side calculated that earning 5% cash back on a $60 gas purchase would return $3, amounting to more than 20 cents in savings per gallon.
“Especially right now with gas prices so high. It’s a great way to lower what you’re paying,” Palmer said.
