Yesterday, Google started rolling out its Universal Cart, and the company is very prominently placing it in Search, AI Mode, Chrome, and the Gemini app.
This “intelligent shopping cart” was previewed in May at I/O 2026 as a “hub for shopping on Google.” It’s meant to help “organize your shopping, keep track of items you love from across retailers, stay on top of promos, and enjoy effortless checkout powered by the Universal Commerce Protocol.”
Universal Cart is now rolling out in the US, and we’re starting to see it in Google Search. A new shopping cart icon will appear in the top-right corner of google.com’s homepage and Search results, as well as on desktop Chrome’s New Tab Page. Clicking slides out a panel with two tabs for “Cart” and “My orders.”
On mobile, the shopping cart appears to the left of the profile switcher in the Google app for Android. That icon also appears on the AI Mode homepage.
In the Gemini app, “Cart and orders” now appears in the account menu.
This Universal Cart icon might be too prominent. It makes Google Search results that have nothing to do with purchases feel like a store page. This is incredibly jarring the first time you see it.
Google product pages gain an “Add to cart” button, with the Universal Cart letting you save products from multiple retailers. A pretty useful capability will automatically keep track of availability changes while offering price drop notifications.
When you’re ready to purchase, Universal Cart will surface promo codes and highlight which payment method in Google Wallet will give you the most perks. Stores like Nike, Target, Walmart, and Shopify merchants will let you make purchases right from the Google interface.
