Google Photos is fixing one of the biggest problems with its AI wardrobe feature

Google Photos is working on a small but useful change to its AI wardrobe feature that could give users more control over how their clothes and accessories appear in their digital wardrobe.
We spotted the change in Google Photos version 7.95 and enabled the feature with some tinkering. Google Photos’ wardrobe feature uses AI to identify and generate images of clothing and other items from your photos. These generated images can then be used with features such as trying on outfits.
The problem is that Google Photos currently generates an image for each wardrobe item when you first set up the feature. If the generated image doesn’t accurately represent the real item, there’s no way to regenerate it. That’s about to change.

We’ve discovered a new “Regenerate image” option that Google is working on for individual wardrobe items.
To regenerate an item, you’ll first need to open its details page in your wardrobe. From there, tapping the three-dot menu in the top-right corner brings up the new Regenerate image option.
Tapping it starts the regeneration process, and Google Photos shows the progress while it creates the new image. You don’t have to remain on the page while this happens. You can leave the screen, and the process will continue in the background.
It’s worth noting that regeneration isn’t simply a way to recreate the exact same item. The AI can make changes to the generated representation.
For example, when we regenerated a pair of glasses, Google Photos made some minor color changes and added nose pads that weren’t present in the original generated image. It made similar changes to a shirt, tweaking its colors and even repositioning its logo.
So, while the feature could be useful when the initial AI-generated image doesn’t accurately represent the real item, there’s always a chance that the AI-generated replacement could be even less accurate than the original.
This matters because these generated wardrobe images aren’t just for viewing. Google Photos uses them for its outfits feature, which allows users to virtually see how different clothing items might look together.
