As previewed earlier this year, Google Chrome is now operating on a two-week release cycle.
Previously, Chrome received a major “milestone” update — like going from version 100 to 101 — every four weeks. Before 2021, Google had a six-week cycle.
The aim of releasing big <a href="https://myappsplus.com/chrome-is-now-shipping-updates-every-2-weeks-as-ai-changes-the-security-landscape/” title=”Chrome is now shipping updates every 2 weeks as AI changes the security landscape”>updates every two weeks is to deliver “new features, performance improvements, and bug fixes faster.” Less is included with each update, but that will be paired with the increased frequency.
Meanwhile, Google says this “increased cadence is a win for the entire web.” Developers will be able to “ship modern web features with confidence, knowing that deployment windows are tighter, interoperability updates arrive quickly, and safety improvements reach users faster across platforms.” The fact that the “scope per release is smaller” will make “regression isolation faster.”
On the security front, Google says this change will “protect against fast-moving threats” given the rise of AI.
For enterprise customers, Chrome offers the “Extended Stable” channel that updates in eight-week increments: Chrome 156 followed by version 160. Google says most enterprise users should be on the two-week Stable option.
Chrome 153 is rolling out starting today for desktop, Android, and iOS. Meanwhile, version 154 will be available on September 22.
