Sony has released four software updates for its current-gen system in the past five weeks. Many observers think that’s no coincidence, given progress on the PS5 console jailbreak. After Sony already blocked exploits with firmware 14.00 and 14.10, 14.20 may aim to prevent further breakthroughs.
Hidden fixes?
It’s unclear whether the new 14.20 firmware update addresses any security flaws. The notes only mention improving “messages and usability on some screens.” Even so, early indications suggest it patched the A53 exploit, which attacks the hardware’s ARM Cortex processor.
In late September, the Relapse exploit surfaced, boasting compatibility with firmware up to July’s 13.60. Combined with the Byepervisor-Reborn bypass, this gave more users access to homebrew apps and tools. However, Sony’s mid-September 14.00 software rollout was a setback for PS5 jailbreak efforts.
Offering hope, developer Gezine accessed hidden debug settings in 14.10 on October 19th. Some followers feared that 14.20 targets this private exploit, but no evidence supports the theory. The A53 patch isn’t necessarily related to the latest discovery.
Possible 14.20 weakness
Now, reports indicate a hacker achieved userland access in 14.20 in record time. While not as significant as a kernel exploit, it could be the first step toward overcoming broader security measures.
Although the PS5 console jailbreak benefited homebrew apps, Sony is likely worried about piracy. Relapse and the hypervisor bypass made it easier to dump and boot PS5 game backups. The unofficial Overdrive store then emerged, cataloging these titles for download. Still, gamers who had installed firmware 14.00 or 14.10 were left out.
Another factor with rising piracy concerns may be the approaching GTA 6 release date. The Rockstar game allegedly will demand at least 14.10 when it debuts on November 19th. PSN connectivity also requires this version, introducing more roadblocks ahead of its launch.
Currently, it doesn’t appear users must install 14.20 to log in to PSN, but that could change soon. Regardless, homebrew developers advise not updating past 13.60 until additional information surfaces. One helpful recommendation is to turn off auto-updates on PS5 consoles.
