Deadline reports that Apple TV recently recorded its biggest week ever for viewership, fueled by its 29 Emmy wins and recent releases such as Ted Lasso and Mayday. Here are the details.
Apple TV sees record viewership following the Emmys
A few weeks ago, Apple TV broke its own record with a total of 29 Emmy wins, 14 of which went to surprise hit Widow’s Bay.
Around the same time, Apple TV subscribers also got the return of Slow Horses, alongside recent releases including the Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh-led Mayday and the much-anticipated fourth season of Ted Lasso.
According to Deadline, this perfect storm helped Apple TV record its “highest weekly viewership ever for the week of Sept. 14, rising by +67% year-over-year.”
Released straight-to-streaming on Sept. 4, Mayday has become Apple TV’s biggest film debut on the platform to date over its first 18 days, the company said. In the U.S., Mayday opened at No. 1 in Luminate’s Sept. 4-10 weekly rankings with 8.7M views. It remained strong in Week 2, placing at No.2.
The site also notes that Widow’s Bay saw a whopping 280% week-over-week increase in viewership during the week after the Emmys, where it took home 14 awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series
Apple TV noted that the increase was particularly notable in “the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, Germany, India, Poland, and Spain,” says Deadline.
The company added that Pluribus saw a similar effect following its six Emmy wins, including Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Rhea Seehorn. The series “experienced a 200% surge in viewership week-over-week following the ceremony,”
Finally, Deadline notes that while the Emmys and recent premieres certainly helped drive the gains, Apple’s recent iCloud+ expansion may also have played a role.
Earlier this month, Apple began including Apple TV with iCloud+ at no extra charge in more than 100 countries, a rollout that also brought the streaming service to 59 new markets for the first time, expanding its total reach to 170 countries.
