    Stanford AI leader brings deep expertise in machine learning and semantic language processing to an interdisciplinary board focused on healthcare commercialization

    BOULDER, Colo., Sept. 3, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — BranchLab today announced that Christopher Manning has joined its Scientific Advisory Board, bringing foundational expertise in machine learning, natural language processing, and computational semantics to the company as it advances the scientific foundation of AI for healthcare commercialization.

    Manning is the Thomas M. Siebel Professor in Machine Learning and Professor of Linguistics and Computer Science at Stanford University, a co-founder and Senior Fellow of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, and former Director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

    Manning’s research has helped define modern machine learning, AI, and natural language processing (NLP). He co-created GloVe, a foundational word-embedding model that paved the way for today’s large language models, and his broader contributions in NLP have shaped both the research community and the technologies behind modern language understanding.

    Healthcare commercialization depends on making sense of complex information. Pharmaceutical organizations have access to vast amounts of health, consumer, and commercial data, but realizing its value requires more than applying AI models. People and intelligent systems need a shared understanding of that information, so they can apply it responsibly and use it to improve decision-making across connected workflows.

    BranchLab is addressing that challenge through Pathwai™, the first Semantic Activation Platform for healthcare commercialization. Pathwai transforms complex healthcare and consumer data into shared commercial meaning and governed intelligence for audience planning, activation, measurement, optimization, and decision-making.

    “Semantics and language are fundamental to how people and intelligent systems make sense of information,” said Manning. “Healthcare commercialization presents an especially demanding application because the information is complex, the decisions are consequential, and the systems must operate within clear governance. BranchLab is taking on that challenge through its Semantic Activation Platform, and I look forward to contributing to the scientific direction behind that work.”

    Manning joins a Scientific Advisory Board built around the belief that no single discipline can address the challenges presented by AI-powered healthcare commercialization. At its center is the complementary work of Manning and Kat Drake, BranchLab’s Vice President of Data Science and AI.

    “Chris brings deep expertise in machine learning and how machines understand language. Kat brings the healthcare, biological, and population-level context needed to turn that intelligence into systems that work in the real world,” said Josh Walsh, CEO of BranchLab. “Together, they bring the scientific depth required to shape Pathwai and advance BranchLab’s broader pursuit of better commercial decisions and better health outcomes.”

    Drake brings deep experience applying computational biology, epidemiology, machine learning, and healthcare data science across the pharmaceutical lifecycle. Before joining BranchLab, she led the Computational Biology Data Science organization at Verily, where her teams applied advanced computational methods across biomarker discovery, epidemiology, proteomics, and population health. At BranchLab, she leads the scientific development of Pathwai and the application of AI to healthcare commercialization. She holds a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Science and Pharmacogenomics from the University of California, San Francisco, and an M.S. in Epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley.

    “Healthcare commercialization has become one of the most interdisciplinary problems in applied AI,” said Drake. “Progress requires advances in how meaning is represented, how people work with intelligent systems, how biological and commercial information is understood together, and how populations are modeled responsibly. No single discipline can solve that problem, which is why we built this board.”

    The broader board reflects that same interdisciplinary approach. Alongside Manning and Drake, it includes Brad Hayes, who leads the Collaborative AI and Robotics Laboratory at the University of Colorado Boulder, and Daniel Larremore, who leads the Larremore Lab at CU Boulder’s Department of Computer Science and BioFrontiers Institute.

    Together, the board helps guide the scientific direction behind Pathwai and BranchLab’s broader work to improve how healthcare organizations understand populations and make commercial decisions. That work is to create more opportunities for patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers to connect with relevant therapies and resources, contributing to better health outcomes at both the individual and system-wide level.

    Manning received the IEEE John von Neumann Medal in 2024 and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2025.

    Manning is also a partner at AIX Ventures, an investor in BranchLab.
