CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY, Switzerland (November 2) — United World Wrestling has updated its Ranking Series points system that will be effective January 1, 2027. The new system will reward match victories more directly and strengthen the role of Ranking Series events in the race to LA 2028.
UWW has introduced a revised allocation method designed to better reflect wrestlers’ performances and ensure a fairer ranking process. Under the Olympic qualification framework, three wrestlers per Olympic weight category will qualify through the UWW Rankings.
One of the changes is an increase in the points allocated at Ranking Series events relative to Continental Championships, while the Senior World Championships and Olympic Games will retain the highest point allocations.
Key Changes to Point Allocation
– Points awarded at Ranking Series competitions will increase relative to Continental Championships
– Wrestler will receive additional points for every bout won, with varying bonus
– Wrestler who compete but do not win a bout will receive a smaller participation allocation
– Fixed placement points will be reduced by 50 percent in weight categories with fewer than eight athletes
– From 11th place onwards at the World Championships, Olympic Games and Ranking Series, and from seventh place at Continental Championships and Continental Games, wrestlers must win at least one bout to receive fixed placement points
Wrestlers who are disqualified or forfeit without being ranked will not receive ranking points. If only one wrestler is registered in a weight category, that athlete will receive participation points only.
At the World Championships and Olympic Games, the winner will receive 40,000 points, compared with 20,000 at Ranking Series events and 10,000 at Continental Championships and Continental Games.

Five Best Results
The ranking points to be considered for the 2028 LA Olympic qualification will consider results from the following competitions:
– 2027 Three Ranking Series events
– 2027 Continental Championships
– 2027 World Championships
– 2028 One Ranking Series event
– 2028 Continental Championships
UWW will consider the best five results of a wrestler as eligible events for LA 2028. The five best results will be selected according to points earned, rather than finishing positions.
Continental Games may be included in the UWW Rankings subject to a decision by the UWW Bureau. If included, only one continental event per year will count for ranking purposes.
