Apple built its first folding iPhone accessories around a wider inner display. That extra screen real estate makes it harder, not easier, to reach controls with one thumb.

Reachability, the <a href="https://myappsplus.com/kindle-android-app-borrows-a-useful-new-feature-from-alexa-tablets/” title=”Kindle Android app borrows a useful new feature from Alexa Tablets”>feature that pulls the top half of the iPhone’s interface down to thumb range, did not make it into the Duo at launch. According to WIRED senior editor Julian Chokkattu‘s review, Apple plans to deliver it through a software update later this year.

What Reachability Does on a Standard iPhone

It’s a simple trick that millions of iPhone users already rely on without thinking about it.

On existing Face ID iPhones, Reachability works quietly until you need it. Per Apple’s support documentation, you enable it under Settings, then Accessibility, then Touch.

A short downward swipe along the bottom edge of the screen then pulls the upper portion of the interface within thumb reach. The result is full-screen access without switching to a two-handed grip.

How the Duo Version Will Differ

A wide display needs a horizontal fix, not a vertical one.

The Duo’s inner display is wider than conventional iPhone displays. Pulling content downward would help, but the more pressing problem is left-to-right reach.

Reporting from 9to5Mac indicates the Duo’s Reachability adaptation will shift content horizontally, moving controls toward the thumb rather than lowering the interface. On a standard iPhone, Reachability solves a top-of-screen problem; on the Duo, it reportedly solves an edge-of-screen problem instead.

WIRED also notes that some third-party apps have not yet been optimized for the full width of the Duo’s inner display. Reachability may help with system controls, but apps that haven’t been updated could still present awkward layouts regardless.

What Buyers Should Know Right Now

Several key details about the feature remain unconfirmed.

Here’s what the available reporting confirms, what it doesn’t, and what to watch before the software update arrives.

    • Reachability is coming to the iPhone Duo via a software update expected later this year, per WIRED’s Julian Chokkattu.
    • On the Duo, the feature is reported to work horizontally rather than using the vertical pull-down behavior found on standard iPhones.
    • Whether Reachability will work on the outer display, the inner display, or both remains unclear; available reporting has not confirmed this detail.
    • Third-party app optimization for the Duo’s inner display is still a work in progress, which affects overall one-handed usability beyond Reachability alone.
    • The cited reporting does not include a standalone Apple announcement about the feature or its exact behavior.

For buyers considering the Duo right now, one-handed use will require patience at launch. The wider inner display raises edge-reach concerns that the Reachability update is expected to address, but the software hasn’t arrived yet.

If one-handed convenience is high on your list, waiting for the Reachability update and early user reports before committing is the more cautious path. A folding phone is already a significant investment. Buying in before a known usability gap is closed adds risk that a few months of smartphone charging tips patience could eliminate.
