Military working dogs charge into places the rest of us would flee. So, I understand why anyone would want to breed tougher, healthier dogs for the job.

Warhound, a new startup from Colossal Biosciences co-founder Ben Lamm and Anduril co-founder Palmer Luckey, has stepped out of stealth with $200 million to clone and gene-edit working dogs for American troops, police departments, and emergency services

Why does the military want engineered dogs?

Warhound’s pitch starts with a supply problem.

It says roughly 80% of the military’s working dogs are imported from Europe. The second problem is that more than half of the candidates wash out during training, often because of inherited issues such as hip dysplasia (a joint disorder), cancer, or poor eyesight.

According to the startup, each dropout means wasted money, so it wants to gene-edit dogs to reduce those risks. Its plan is surprisingly concrete, with a clear role for every company involved. Warhound collects cells from top-performing working dogs, mostly Belgian Malinois, along with some Labradors and shepherds, and stores them as cell lines (lab-grown copies of a dog’s own cells).

Colossal’s scientists then edit the genes, while ViaGen, a Colossal-owned cloning specialist, clones the resulting cells into dogs. Anduril supplies protective vests, goggles, and sensors that send information back to handlers.

What is still unanswered about these dogs?

While Sequoia and the CIA-backed firm In-Q-Tel back the idea at a $1.2 billion valuation, Warhound hasn’t announced a price per dog. The first litter is due in early 2027. They hope to start working duty within two years. Now, biotech timelines often slip, so I’d treat that as a hope.

None of the coverage I read names which genes will be edited. Health fixes lead the pitch, with speed and a sharper smell framed as goals, since those are the most important qualities in working dogs.

On civilian safety, he said these dogs will receive standard working-dog training. American Humane Society will certify the training and help retired dogs find homes, which reassures me, though its described role stops at training and retirement.
