WhatsApp may soon stop working on many older Galaxy smartphones. Meta is now blocking the app on outdated Android devices and iPhones running an unsupported software version. This isn’t about an older version of WhatsApp, but the system software. This basically means you need to update your device to the latest available software or, if no update is available, switch to a newer phone.
WhatsApp warns users to upgrade their device software
As WhatsApp is rolling out a new warning to users with old devices. It’s a server-side notice that appears on devices running an outdated Android OS or iOS version. Once the notice appears, users can no longer access the app. They cannot simply dismiss the warning and log into WhatsApp. They must update the device before they can complete the login
WhatsApp has not revealed exactly which operating system versions will trigger the login block. However, this restriction likely applies to years-old versions of Android OS and iOS. The company recently ended support for Android 5.0 and 5.1, making Android 6.0 the minimum supported version. WhatsApp will also raise its minimum iPhone requirement to iOS 15.5 from November 30, 2026.

As such, this warning may be appearing on devices running older OS versions than the current minimum requirement. Those seeing this message can no longer continue using WhatsApp due to security reasons. The company says these older devices have stopped receiving security patches, leaving known vulnerabilities that attackers can exploit to extract sensitive information.
Even though WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption, that protection cannot prevent malware on a vulnerable phone from accessing information before it is encrypted. The app is now forcing users to upgrade to a newer model for their own security. The good news is that this move only affects a small number of WhatsApp users with a device that is too old to receive a newer operating system. Most users remain unaffected.
