Valve, the company behind Steam, has been an ardent supporter of gaming on Linux since it began developing the Steam Deck handheld. Proton, a new compatibility layer designed primarily to run Windows games on the Linux platform, was developed by Valve to make gaming on Linux, and conversely, the Steam Deck, a hassle-free and performance-driven experience.
Building on Proton’s promise for handhelds
With Proton, Linux users could finally make their dream of playing PC games on Linux a reality without installing Windows separately. SteamOS, a new Linux distribution with an interface similar to video game consoles, was also designed for the Steam Deck handheld. SteamOS also proved popular, with Valve shipping it on its latest gadgets: the Steam Machine and the Steam Frame. SteamOS was also installed on desktop PCs for comparisons with Windows and other Linux distros.
In a breakthrough for Linux gaming, Valve appears to have open-sourced the code for its latest innovation, called “Lepton,” on GitLab. Lepton is a new compatibility layer designed to run Android games on Linux. This means users can play their favorite Android games on Linux without emulators or other third-party apps.
Lepton’s description on its GitLab page reads: “Lepton is a tool for use with the Steam client which allows games which are exclusive to Android to run on the Linux operating system. Most users should use Lepton provided by the Steam Client itself.”
A ‘for-VR’ solution that has since gone open source
While Lepton was developed to help run Android VR games on the new Steam Frame, other experts and hobbyists can take the existing code and engineer it to suit their needs. Lepton’s open- games like Clash of Clans, Subway Surfers, etc. Make their way to Linux
Lepton’s introduction lends credence to a future where Linux gamers overtake Windows gamers, with Valve playing a pioneering role in facilitating the switch. Regardless, this is a groundbreaking milestone for Linux gaming, and many users will be anticipating some developments similar to what has been observed with Proton. Gaming on Linux is looking to enter a golden age soon.
