China state TV affiliate flags Anthropic data and 13 privacy policy tweaks ahead of US-China summit
A social media platform linked to China Central Television (CCTV) has accused American artificial intelligence (AI) developer Anthropic of creating severe data security risks, alleging that the company’s internal privacy frameworks permit user records to be shared with US intelligence agencies without formal legal oversight. The allegations, published on Saturday (September 19) by Yuyuantantian, an account affiliated with the Chinese state broadcaster, say that successive updates to Anthropic’s legal terms have systematically widened surveillance vulnerabilities for international users.The criticism comes at a diplomatically sensitive moment, coming just as Beijing and Washington prepare to convene bilateral trade negotiations ahead of a planned meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump on September 24.
‘Anthropic makes 13 privacy tweaks’
According to the Yuyuantantian post (via Bloomberg), Anthropic has amended its official privacy documentation 13 separate times since 2023. The report highlighted specific adjustments governing how overseas consumer records are handled. As per the allegations, updated provisions enable user data originating in the European Union, Canada, Brazil and South Korea to be transmitted straight to US servers.The platform allegedly expanded its active data sources from three to six between June 2024 and September 2025. The post also claimed that Anthropic quietly revised its system terms in September of last year to automatically ingest user interactions for AI model training by default.The publication pointed directly to disclosures inside Anthropic’s own reporting, noting that the startup admitted to handing technical threat indicators over to US intelligence agencies after accusing certain Chinese enterprises of carrying out unauthorised model-distillation operations.Yuyuantantian further alleged that the AI firm is deliberately cultivating close ties with American defense and intelligence apparatuses through its recruitment pipeline.
