Custom Feeds, <a href="https://myappsplus.com/everything-announced-at-meta-connect-2026/” title=”Everything announced at Meta Connect 2026″>announced September 23 at YouTube’s Made on YouTube 2026 event, gives you a direct way to address that. Describe what you want in plain language, and Google’s Gemini AI builds a dedicated recommendation feed around your prompt, joining a wave of AI-powered websites reshaping how users interact with content.
What Custom Feeds Actually Does
Type a description, and Gemini generates a personalized feed that lives as its own tab on your YouTube homepage, alongside the standard Home feed rather than replacing it.
The core feature details, according to YouTube’s official announcement:
- Describe your feed using topic, mood, viewing context, or specific exclusions in natural language
- Gemini processes the prompt and generates a matching recommendation feed
- Each feed lives in a separate tab; your default Home feed stays untouched
- Multiple custom feeds are supported simultaneously
- Rolling out on web, mobile, and TVs for U.S. users this fall 2026
Discovery at YouTube’s scale has always been the real challenge. “There’s over 20 billion videos in the YouTube corpus, so you’re always one search away from a treasure trove of topics,” said Emily Moxley, YouTube’s vice president of Product Management for Viewer AI, in comments
YouTube’s own examples illustrate the practical range: a feed of video podcasts sized for a 30-minute commute, or relaxing commentary to wind down with before sleep. For viewers with narrow interests or limited viewing windows, that kind of intentional framing goes further than likes and watch history typically allow.
What This Feature Does Not Do
Custom Feeds offer more direct control than conventional recommendation signals, but they do not hand you the keys to YouTube’s algorithm.
Custom Feeds do not give you access to YouTube’s underlying ranking code. Gemini interprets your prompt, but YouTube still determines which videos qualify and what content policies apply. Wired noted that distinction in its coverage of the announcement.
The direction fits a pattern already visible across other platforms. Bluesky introduced selectable custom feeds in 2023, then added Attie, a natural-language feed-creation tool, earlier this year X, and Spotify have each explored user-directed or AI-assisted feed customization, per Yahoo Tech. Starting this fall, U.S. viewers gain a meaningful new layer of control over what YouTube surfaces: not ownership of the algorithm, but the ability to describe the viewing experience they actually want and have the platform build toward it. One open question worth watching is whether Gemini will surface videos from outside a viewer’s existing subscriptions, or whether the feed will largely reflect familiar channels in a new arrangement. How that plays out could determine whether Custom Feeds genuinely expands discovery or simply reorganizes what YouTube was already going to show you.
