Why Apple Wants Your Selfie in the New iOS 27.2 Update

    Under the new
iOS 27.2 update, Apple now wants adult users to confirm their age with a selfie
instead of submitting a credit card or government ID.

Apple has released a new version of iOS, bringing necessary improvements and additions,
from new languages on Siri to additional hardware support for the iPhone Duo.

However, the most interesting addition is this new security feature, which may
be intended for convenience but could raise some privacy concerns.

    This feature is
being rolled out to help Apple and developers comply with increasingly strict
child safety regulations worldwide, especially in the UK.

    This year, Australia
has been at the forefront of age restrictions for social media and other online
services, so it is no surprise that these are among the key countries where the
    feature would be implemented.

    Because
biometrics are highly sensitive, Apple has confirmed on its official support
page that the selfies are never accessible to anyone, including Apple, and are
immediately deleted once the user’s age has been estimated.

    The company also
confirmed that the process runs entirely on the iPhone and Apple’s Secure Cloud
Compute servers, so there should be little reason to worry about privacy.

    Other features
in this week’s iOS 27.2 update focus on the controversial new iPhone Duo and
Apple’s efforts to expand Siri’s language support.

What’s New in the iOS 27.2 Update?

    Beyond
biometrics, Apple is also pushing cross-app intelligence on iPhones, similar to
what Google introduced with Gemini Personal Intelligence on Android Auto.

    Once
a supported iPhone is updated, it can automatically suggest calendar events,
reminders, notes, or photo searches directly in conversations.

    This looks like
an upgrade to conversations on iPhones, but it still requires user permission
    to be activated.

    Siri now also
supports more languages than ever, with French, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean,
    and Japanese added.

Google Gemini still supports significantly more languages
than Siri, but this reflects progress in Apple’s new Siri experience. iOS 27.2
also adds support for wired and wireless Apple Pencil connectivity on the
    iPhone Duo.

    iOS 27
introduced a massive redesign and Apple Intelligence integration to the iPhone,
while the new iOS 27.2 update adds features to improve this experience further.
iOS 27.2 supports the iPhone 11 and newer models, featuring the same hardware
    compatibility list as iOS 26.
