Apple introduced a new photo Extend feature with the iOS 27 update that lets users extend the outer edges of their photos using Siri AI generative technology. It comes in really handy when you want to change a photo’s aspect ratio or adjust its framing.
However, only iPhones that support Siri AI can use this feature, so people with older iPhones are limited to third-party AI tools. Now WhatsApp is adding a similar feature to its iOS app, allowing you to create stories or share photos with friends without switching between apps
How do you expand a photo in WhatsApp?
<a href="https://myappsplus.com/android-autos-latest-gemini-failing-keeps-asking-who-do-you-want-to-call/” title=”Android Auto's latest Gemini failing keeps asking 'who do you want to call'”>Android users have had this option for a while, and now WhatsApp is testing it with a small group of iPhone beta users. To try it, open any photo from a chat and you’ll land in WhatsApp’s editing screen, which already has a few AI effects.

The new expand tool sits right alongside them. Give it a tap, wait a moment, and Meta AI will widen the picture by adding fresh details beyond the original borders. Once you’re happy, you can send it in a chat or share it on your status.
If you don’t see the tool, try a square photo. WhatsApp hides the option for pictures that already fit the frame it supports.
Can you redo it if the AI messes up?
Yes, and you can do it as many times as you want. Nothing leaves your phone until you hit send, so you’ll always get a preview first. Didn’t like how Meta AI filled in the edges? Tap undo to go back to your original photo, or run the expand tool again for a completely new take.
