The Pixel 11 Pro is the wrong Pixel to buy this year
The Pro has its upsides, but is it enough to justify the extra cost?

The new Google Pixel 11 series is a known quantity at this point. It comes with several new AI featureslike Gemini Intelligence, camera improvements, and the brand-new Tensor G6 chip. Although many Google fans are drawn to the beefier Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL, that doesn’t mean the Pro phones are the best pick for everyone.
The base Pixel 11 might miss out on the extra features you’d get with a Pro, but you’ll save a fair chunk of change, and you are likely to find, at least when it comes to performance, that the phones are more alike than different.
Ultimately, as tempting as the Pixel 11 Pro is, I feel the Pixel 11 is a much better value for most people.
Is the Pixel 11 Pro series worth it this year?
The Pro offers more, but will you actually make the most of it?

It used to be that the gap between the base Pixel and the Pro series was fairly wide, but year after year, the gap has shrunk as Google brings more high-end features to its non-Pro model. Just last year, Google brought a telephoto shooter to the standard Pixel for the very first time, and this year we’re seeing the Pro drop from 16GB of RAM to just 12GB on its base configuration, which matches what you’d get with the regular Pixel 11.
Of course, you could also argue the opposite, and say the gap is widening again with the Pixel 11 Pro. Its zoom feature was already better over the base Pixel, but now it’s jumping from 100x to 120x. The new telephoto camera is also said to allow 30% more light, which should make zoomed-in shots clearer than ever.
The display on the Pro models is brighter than ever, packing an additional 1000 nits of peak brightness. As if that wasn’t enough for you, there’s also a new HiLight that is effectively a modern take on a notification light, and it’s at least slightly reminiscent of Nothing’s Glyph technology.
I get the temptation to call this a major upgrade, and these features really do make a difference. However, they are arguably also pretty niche.
Yes, the Pixel 11 Pro has a stronger camera, with better zoom and a much stronger ultrawide secondary shooter onboard. Still, unless you are zooming in regularly — which is probably not most of us — you’ll find this is a benefit you’ll rarely actually use.
While Google’s zoom features are quite advanced, they still degrade image quality the further you push things. In most cases, I’ve rarely ever gone beyond 15 to 30x zoom on any smartphone, and even the base Pixel 11 is now capable of this. While the Pro might produce slightly stronger shots overall, the Pixel 11 still has a great camera experience that’s perfect for mainstream users.
The Pro offers several features the standard Pixel 11 doesn’t, but will you actually use these extras?
Likewise, brightness matters if you spend a ton of time working outdoors or are a major outdoor sports enthusiast. But as someone who has the Galaxy S24, which has the same brightness level as the Pixel 11, I’ve used it in all those environments with no major issues. You might have to squint on occasion, but it’s perfectly readable even in direct sun.
Then there’s HiLight. While I personally feel this feature has a ton of future potential, it’s currently pretty limited. Right now, it uses dynamic lighting patterns to tell you when Gemini is listening, thinking, or responding. You can also assign a color to a favorite contact for phone calls. While Google has plans to add more features than this, out of the box, that’s currently all you get. Simply put, HiLight alone isn’t a reason to buy a Pixel yet.
The Pixel 11 offers equal performance and better value
What really matters for most users is day-to-day performance, and the Pixel 11 matches the Pixel 11 Pro completely here. Not only is the Tensor G6 identical, as mentioned, but both models also offer 12GB of base RAM this year. There is also a 16GB model for the Pro, but again, you’ll be paying even more for only mildly noticeable performance gains.
Battery life remains largely the same as well. In fact, the Pixel 11 has a slightly larger 4,985mAh battery, compared to the 4,850mAh battery in the Pixel 11 Pro. You’ll also find the same wireless and wired charging speeds.
Beyond the hardware, a similar story applies to the software. All members of the Pixel 11 family get Gemini Intelligence, Magic Capture, Creator Suite, and Circle to Search improvements. You won’t get the AI-powered Pro Zoom features or the free six-month Google AI Pro plan, but otherwise, you’ll get more or less an identical experience.
Other Pixels that are also worth considering
If you don’t need the absolute best camera, a brighter display, or the HiLight feature, you’ll save at least $200 by sticking with the Pixel 11. You’ll still get an excellent Android phone capable of handling any game or app you can throw at it. Additionally, the Pixel 11 also comes with seven years of OS updates and bug fixes, just like the Pro models.
Looking to save even more while still getting a flagship-level device? Right now, you can grab the Pixel 10 either second-hand or new at a discount. You’ll save even more, and you’ll find the Tensor G5 and G6 aren’t as big a gap as you would have found between the G4 and G5.
Finally, if you like Google’s vision for the Pixel series but want to pay as little as possible for a new phone, the Google Pixel 10a packs a slightly more aged Tensor G4, but at $500, it’s an incredible value with one of the best camera packages you’ll find at the mid-range.
In other words, there are plenty of great Pixels to buy in 2026, many of which are a good value and easy recommendations for most people. However, if you ask me, the Pixel 11 Pro isn’t one of them.
