In the closing segment, the panel looks ahead, both at where the technology is heading and at what will still require human judgment once it gets there. Piotr Alvarez outlines a three-horizon view of artificial intelligence’s (AI) impact on peptide method development. In the near term, he expects AI to narrow the range of conditions worth testing, using accumulated experimental databases to compress development timelines from months to weeks or even days. In the medium term, he anticipates software capable of running column and mobile-phase screening autonomously, guided by Quality-by-Design principles. Longer term, he expects automation and robotics to extend into physical lab tasks—refilling mobile-phase reservoirs, switching columns, and eventually automating sample preparation, which he notes can already be more challenging than the chromatographic separation itself.

Nitish Sharma adds that his lab is prioritizing two-dimensional liquid chromatography (2D-LC) adoption and ion mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS), which he sees as particularly valuable for resolving isomeric impurities that other techniques struggle to distinguish. Sam Whitmarsh raises the emergence of large language models capable of interpreting spectroscopic data, prompting a discussion of where automation will and won’t replace scientific judgment. Alvarez is direct on this point: critical thinking and decision-making will remain with scientists, especially as GLP-1 peptides evolve into more complex conjugates—linked to small molecules, oligonucleotides, siRNA, or antibodies—where properties can shift substantially and interpretation grows harder, not easier. Whitmarsh illustrates this with a real case study involving an oligopeptide-oligonucleotide conjugate, where his team ultimately found more success treating it primarily as a peptide with an attached oligonucleotide rather than the reverse.

The panel closes by returning to why this work matters: these are medicines already changing patients’ lives, and the analytical rigor discussed throughout the series is what allows them to reach the people who need them safely.
