Now that Tesla’s redesigned Caraoke app has been out publicly for a few weeks, new changes are being noticed to the entertainment feature that add mobile integration, but remove rear-screen support.

The changes are part of the Summer 2026 update announced in July, which began rolling out to customer vehicles that same month. That release delivered Tesla’s redesigned Caraoke app with live scoring, turning the casual sing-along feature into a gamified rhythm experience complete with star ratings and pitch tracking, not unlike popular titles like Rock Band.

Drive Mode Scoring Rules and Mobile Song Queuing

Caraoke now works differently depending on whether the vehicle is in motion, even if you say that you’re a passenger in the vehicle. While in Drive, lyrics will continue to display on the center touchscreen so passengers can sing along, but pitch visualizers are disabled, and no score is tracked. The competitive scoring element remains active exclusively while parked, keeping the driver focused on the road ahead.

Outside of limitations while driving, the update introduces handy collaborative features for rear passengers. Back-seat occupants now get a QR code they can scan to select songs to sing and more.

Scanning the code on the rear touchscreen with a smartphone lets riders:

    • Browse the song catalog and change the current track directly from their phone

    • Build a shared Caraoke queue so the music never stops

    • Follow along with real-time scrolling lyrics on their personal mobile devices

Giving every passenger access to queue up tracks prevents constant reaching between rows, making group road trips far more fun.

A Step Backward for Rear Screen Lyrics

While mobile queuing is a great addition, one notable change feels like a step backward for cabin convenience.

Previously, rear passengers could read lyrics directly off the smaller secondary screen mounted behind the center console. With this latest revision, full-screen lyric playback has been completely removed from the rear display. The screen now simply displays the track title and artist of the song currently playing.

To view the words from the back seat, passengers are now forced to scan the QR code and read the lyrics on their own mobile devices, which loads a web page hosted by Stingray — the media partner powering Tesla’s Caraoke library.

Offloading real-time lyric scrolling to individual phones frees up the rear display for climate and other controls, but rear passengers who preferred reading along on the built-in screen are bound to feel the absence.
