The Xperia 10 VI smartphone launched in May 2024 with Android 14 pre-installed. At the time, Sony promised that the device would receive three major Android updates, implying that the phone would eventually upgrade to Android 17. However, that promise has now been revoked, a change Sony has officially communicated to its users.
Why Sony Canceled the Android 17 Update for Xperia 10 VI
According to Sony representatives, the Xperia 10 VI will not receive Android 17 due to constraints related to the device’s storage configuration. The company conducted a detailed technical evaluation, which concluded that the smartphone would be unable to provide an adequate level of performance for the interface and features on the new OS version. This indicates that while Sony did test an Android 17 build on this model, it ultimately decided against releasing the update to the public.
Impact on Xperia 10 VI Owners
Such justifications from major mobile manufacturers are extremely rare, and backtracking on previous promises to users is not a good look. Nevertheless, the company has issued an official apology and confirmed it intends to fulfill its other commitment: providing security patches for the 10 VI model for a total of four years. It was also confirmed that this decision does not affect any other models in the Xperia lineup.
