Samsung has quietly launched the Galaxy Buds On, its first clip-on wireless earbuds under the Galaxy Buds branding. The new wireless earbuds were quietly unveiled alongside the US launch of the Galaxy Tab S12 series and SmartTag 3, although Samsung didn’t give them the same fanfare as its other new hardware.
The Galaxy Buds On have been rumored for quite some time, and their official unveiling confirms Samsung is expanding its wireless earbuds lineup beyond the familiar in-ear design. Instead of sitting inside the ear canal, the Galaxy Buds On use a clip-on design that rests around the ear while leaving the ear canal open.
Design and controls
The design of the new Galaxy Buds On ensures you can hear what’s happening around you while listening to music or having a conversation. Samsung also says the buds put less strain on the ears during extended use.
The company says it analyzed data from different ear shapes and ran simulations to optimize the positioning of the speakers and battery. The Buds On feature an ergonomic design with a larger contact area to distribute pressure more evenly, while the band’s elasticity has been fine-tuned to keep the earbuds securely in place during movement.
You can also control key functions, such as music playback and calls, with a light tap on the back of the earbuds.
The Buds On feature “TwinBoost speakers” that are designed to improve low-frequency performance, along with automatic volume control that adjusts to the surrounding environment. Samsung has also introduced an Audio Leakage Reduction feature designed to reduce sound leakage from the earbuds.
Galaxy Buds On specs and features
Elsewhere, the Galaxy Buds On are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S7 Gen 1 Sound Platform and a high-efficiency Class-D amplifier. Samsung claims up to 9.5 hours of continuous music playback on a single charge.
The earbuds also support Samsung’s Intelligent Clear Call technology. They use three microphones, a bone-conduction-based Voice Pickup Unit sensor, and machine learning to separate the wearer’s voice from background noise. Samsung says this setup can help keep calls clear even in noisy environments.
AI and other features
Apart from their specs and unusual design, the Buds On also pack several Galaxy AI features when they’re paired with a compatible Galaxy smartphone or tablet.
For example, users can say, “Hey Google, let’s talk live,” while wearing the Buds On to launch Gemini Live and have a hands-free conversation with Google’s AI assistant.
There’s also a Quick Voice Memo feature that lets you long-press on the touch area of an earbud to instantly start recording a voice memo. These recordings can later be searched using Bixby without needing to pull out the phone.
The feature requires a Galaxy AI-supported device, Samsung’s Voice Recorder, and the Bixby app, and users need to configure the long-press action separately in Settings.
The Buds On also support Head Gestures, allowing users to perform specific actions with their heads. You can answer or end calls, dismiss alarms, or read message notifications by nodding or shaking your head when your hands aren’t available.
Galaxy Buds On price and availability
Samsung will launch the Galaxy Buds On in South Korea first on October 27. They’ll initially be available in a single black color and cost 299,000 won (~$220).
Samsung says the earbuds will subsequently roll out to other global markets, although it hasn’t announced pricing or availability for individual regions yet.
