Samsung can only hope that it won`t face any major product scandal anytime soon (think Galaxy Note 7). For now at least, people in Samsung`s worldwide marketing team are taking delight in Apple`s somewhat botched iPhone Duo launch. In recent weeks, the first foldable out of Cupertino has mostly made headlines for its poor resistance to dirt and, of course, the broken hinges experienced by some early users.

According to Apple, the latter issue affects only a handful of units, but the damage to public opinion is unlikely to be easily fixed anytime soon. Memes of varying creativity are circulating on social media (see the example above), and competitors such as Samsung (and Honor) are fueling the discussion with posts of their own, primarily on Instagram and X. Samsung Canada kicked things off with an Instagram post showing a few wallpapers featuring the now-iconic pixel defects in the middle, along with a reminder that foldable smartphones are nothing new for Samsung.

Samsung Malaysia joins in with a meme video

Shortly afterward, Samsung Malaysia joined the chorus of crackgate memes and posted the video below, showing a Galaxy Z Fold 8 suddenly displaying a broken screen after being folded six times — a reference to the first reports of failures on Reddit. Fortunately, in this case it was just a wallpaper. Crackgate probably has little in common with genuine scandals such as the iPhone 6’s bendgate, as the number of affected devices is simply too small. Nevertheless, owners should handle their US$2,000 iPhone Duo carefully and protect it from dirt in particular.
