All first-year Purdue University Northwest (PNW) students for the 2026-27 academic year are receiving a headstart on the possibilities and limitations of artificial intelligence (AI) tools through university-provided access to Google Gemini.

Google Gemini is Google LLC’s advanced AI platform that analyzes information, offers support in processing complex workflows and assists with other virtual tasks. PNW first-year students, through their coursework, are guided by instructors on ethical AI tool use and can gain an understanding of the tools’ applications for enhancing knowledge and progress across different fields.

The opportunity to ethically integrate Google Gemini in coursework and learning habits allows students to familiarize themselves with emerging technologies and earn a competitive advantage for their career aspirations, which are also shifting in various ways due to AI applications.

“Preparing students for the future workforce is one of our highest priorities. AI is becoming an integral part of nearly every profession, and it is essential that our graduates understand how to use these tools effectively, ethically and responsibly. By providing opportunities for students to engage with AI throughout their academic journey, we are helping them develop the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in an increasingly technology-driven world,” said PNW Chancellor Kenneth C. Holford.

PNW first-year students’ access to Google Gemini licenses is facilitated through Purdue University and Google Public Sector’s strategic partnership, announced in early 2026, which strengthens opportunities for AI-enabled education, innovation and workforce development.

PNW’s allocation of Google Gemini licenses during the 2026-27 academic year also serves as a pilot initiative for a developing AI literacy and competency requirement for graduation, helping students and the university community transform into an AI-ready institution. Purdue West Lafayette introduced an AI competency requirement beginning with the incoming fall 2026 class.
