Thankfully, there’s no more beige.
If the name Packard Bell sends you back to beige desktop towers, chunky CRT monitors, floppy disks and the screech of a dial-up modem, Acer has a surprise for you. The PC brand that was seemingly forever attached to American electronics stores in the ’90s got a full relaunch at IFA 2026, with lots of orange, purple, green and yellow products that shake off the design language of old.
Don’t let the name fool you: the beige is gone. Packard Bell is part of the Acer Group, which is positioning the brand around affordable consumer tech that just works, rather than anything particularly exotic. Valerie Piau, EMEA vice president at Acer Europe SA, said the idea behind its new “Tech it easy” tagline is to keep everyday technology simple and offer it “all at a fair price.”
However, there’s a major major catch for those in the US who are feeling nostalgic: Acer will only offer its new Packard Bell range to consumers across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
The new Packard Bell is more than just PCs
The DotBook is a 14.5-inch laptop with a 1,920 x 1,200 IPS display, an Intel Core 3 N355 processor, up to 16GB of DDR4 RAM and up to 512GB of storage. The notebook weighs less than 2.9 pounds and has a battery life of up to seven hours Prices start at €499 (about $580)
Those specs place the DotBook squarely in everyday computing territory rather than the premium end of the laptop market. Packard Bell itself markets it for browsing, streaming and day-to-day tasks, but even with the familiar badge on the lid, it doesn’t necessarily make the DotBook a good deal.
What’s more surprising about the return is the extent to which Acer is taking the Packard Bell brand beyond the PC. The first collection includes the DotLoop suitcase turntable, a DotLine 4G feature phone, DotLook audio glasses, headphones, a ring light and other desk accessories. There’s even a connected mini-steamer made with Steasy, because apparently a revived ’90s PC brand also needs to cater for people’s stomachs.
There’s at least some established infrastructure behind that mix. Acer says that Packard Bell customers will have access to multilingual support in 28 countries as well as its existing EMEA service-center network. The company’s announcement, however, didn’t specify warranty terms for individual markets.
There is no US comeback, at least for now
The regional focus seems particularly odd, given how visible Packard Bell once was in the US. Its low-cost home computers were sold at Sears, Walmart, Best Buy, Circuit City, Costco and CompUSA in the early 1990s, putting those bulky beige towers in front of people who weren’t necessarily browsing specialist computer stores. For plenty of families, this was what buying a PC looked like.
This is not the first time that Acer has played the nostalgia card. In 2020, PC stalwart Gateway made a comeback in the US through Walmart with colorful budget laptops and tablets, years after being acquired by Acer. The company made its latest launch possible by acquiring a 75 percent stake in Packard Bell’s parent company for $45.8 million way back in 2008.
For now, the revival is primarily focused on the other side of the Atlantic and beyond. Acer says pricing and availability may vary by market and sales channel, with its own announcement giving conflicting timing for the DotBook, mentioning both September and the fourth quarter of 2026. The announcement doesn’t state whether this new Packard Bell lineup will eventually reach US stores.
