Nothing built its reputation on defying the aesthetic norms of the Android ecosystem. While CEO Carl Pei recently acknowledged that the company’s hyper-fast development pace may have caused occasional friction, its latest software iteration suggests the brand is rapidly finding its stride. Following its initial debut on the Phone 3, the Android 17-based Nothing OS 5.0 Open Beta is now officially rolling out to the Nothing Phone 4a Pro.
Weighing in at a substantial 2.73GB, the beta arrives just over a week behind its initial early-September target. Phone 4a Pro users eager to test the new firmware can enroll through the Beta Hub, though Nothing cautions that it may take up to five minutes for the update prompt to appear on devices.
A Sweeping Visual Evolution
Nothing OS 5.0 delivers a comprehensive aesthetic refresh to the platform. The update introduces the sleek Geist typeface, newly refined status bar icons, noticeably smoother system animations, and expanded integration for dark theme enthusiasts.
Customization is also receiving a major boost. Users can now tweak lock screen clock colors, experiment with fresh clock faces, and explore a newly overhauled wallpaper gallery. Additionally, a highly requested quality-of-life feature has been added: the ability to move multiple home screen icons simultaneously.
The Power of Android 17
Built on the foundation of Android 17, the beta fundamentally changes how users interact with their devices by separating the notification shade from the Quick Settings panel.
The underlying Android update also brings three-color privacy indicators, Noto 3D emojis integrated directly into Gboard, and enhanced Live Updates. Bluetooth management has been vastly improved, allowing users to connect and disconnect from paired accessories directly within the Quick Settings menu without diving into the broader settings app.
Hardware Integrations: Camera and Glyph Upgrades
Nothing is refining its proprietary hardware features, notably shifting its signature Glyph interface into a dedicated standalone application. This move is accompanied by the introduction of new widgets, including Collector, Away Time, and Glyph Timer.
The camera experience is receiving equal attention. The standout addition is a dual-view video mode, which allows creators to record from the front and rear cameras simultaneously. The update also promises superior zoom capabilities, sharper close-up performance, and steadier QR code detection, alongside subtle refinements to Motion Photos, Google Lens integration, and HDR brightness tuning.
The Road Ahead: What’s Still Missing
Because this is a beta build, several highly anticipated features announced by Nothing are temporarily absent.
The fully redesigned home screen and the striking Micrographics clock face are being held back for the general public release, which is slated to begin in October. Access to the new Essential Apps Builder is currently rolling out in a phased approach. Furthermore, the company’s Essential Space will gain MCP support in October, followed by a redesigned capture experience in November. Finally, real-time translation capabilities for Essential Voice are expected to launch before the end of the year.
