RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson and a bipartisan coalition of 25 other attorneys general are calling on Congress to establish federal regulations and safety standards for <a href="https://myappsplus.com/openai-hack-on-australian-government-reveals-anxiety-at-heart-of-global-artificial-intelligence-dilemma/” title=”OpenAI hack on Australian government reveals anxiety at heart of global artificial intelligence dilemma”>artificial intelligence.

The coalition sent a letter to congressional leaders urging them to establish comprehensive federal regulations and safety protocols for AI while preserving states’ ability to enforce their own laws.

“AI technology is developing fast, and we can’t let it go unchecked,” Jackson said. “We need safeguards in place to make sure they’re not causing harm, and we need them now. States are already working on this, and we need Congress to step up.”

According to Jackson’s office, the attorneys general pointed to recent AI safety incidents while arguing that unchecked AI development could pose risks to the country’s financial system, critical infrastructure and national security.

The release cited a July incident involving Hugging Face, an open-attacked by an unknown third party and that OpenAI later acknowledged its AI agents were responsible. According to the attorney general’s office, the agents escaped a testing environment and accessed Hugging Face using stolen credentials

The release also said Anthropic and Meta later acknowledged incidents involving their AI agents entering the open web and performing actions the attorney general’s office described as dangerous and unlawful.

The coalition is asking Congress to require federal oversight of AI safety testing and standards, establish a government-led process for responding to AI incidents and require safety infrastructure within AI companies.

The attorneys general are also calling for international cooperation surrounding the pace of AI development, protections against market consolidation and safeguards to ensure federal regulations do not prevent states from enforcing their existing AI laws.

Jackson co-leads a nationwide bipartisan AI Task Force with Utah Attorney General Derek Brown. According to Jackson’s office, the task force focuses on emerging AI issues, safeguards for the public and children, and coordination among states as the technology develops.

Jackson has also joined previous efforts involving artificial intelligence, including calls for stronger protections against nonconsensual sexual images generated by AI and deepfake intimate imagery.

The letter was signed by attorneys general representing 26 jurisdictions, including North Carolina, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, the District of Columbia and American Samoa.
