La. (WAFB) – A number of LSU students say they feel stuck after being accused of using artificial intelligence to cheat. Students have a chance to clear their names, but the process has become bogged down

“My teacher completely scratched all of it out and said it was 93% AI written,” one student said, speaking anonymously last semester.

When a student is accused of cheating, the university has to launch an investigation through its Student Advocacy and Accountability department (SAA). One of the main LSU officials in charge of academics, Provost Dr. Joseph Messina, said the school has had to change its process to keep up with investigations and is still behind.

“We actually had to expand the resources available, the people who were checking, because there was so many cases that were reported,” said Messina.

Classes have not started yet, and a backlog from last year has placed students in a difficult position as they try to clear their names. Some students have waited months for an outcome, with scholarships and financial aid at stake.

One of the largest AI studies yet found a large number of students using AI to cheat on papers a senior researcher at UC Berkeley’s Center for Studies in Higher Education. The same study found that detection software professors use sometimes comes with severe <a href="https://myappsplus.com/what-the-tech-fake-ai-reviews/” title=”What the Tech: Fake AI Reviews”>technical flaws and a high number of incorrect detections of AI

In a statement to WAFB the SAA said the following,“LSU does not rely solely on AI-detection technology to determine academic misconduct. Faculty identify observable concerns based on their expertise, course expectations, and knowledge of a student’s work.

Student Advocacy and Accountability considers the totality of the information and evidence, ensuring decisions are not only timely but fair and well supported.”

“Part of the institutional response to those deadlines was hiring more people to make sure the process occurred more quickly and that students were able to progress and complete the things they need to do. So the institutional response is behind them in trying to make this as efficient as possible,” Messina said.

In a previous report, hundreds of students faced allegations last year. On Thursday, the university said it dealt with over 2,400 student misconduct cases, 73% of them AI-related.

An LSU spokesperson was asked how many of those cases ended in guilty verdicts but said that information was private.

“We’re paying tuition, we’re coming here to get an education, and I think students that work hard and work honestly, they shouldn’t be afraid of being falsely accused,” said Jude Terrell.

Terrell, an LSU senior, heads a student club and recently helped create an AI council at LSU, working with faculty to develop new ways to handle AI at the university. Terrell said he has seen suspected students face institutional punishments.

“There’s a lot of risk that can come to their financial aid, marks can be put on their transcripts, and even in the most severe cases, students can be let go from the university completely,” Terrell said.

Messina said time will help address the issue.

“We will come to some new equilibrium with respect to using AI in the classroom and in education that will be effective for the students and efficient. So, it will decline; it’s not a permanent problem, it’s a problem we face right now,” Messina said.
