LineageOS has released Changelog 32 just ahead of its 10th anniversary, completing a rebase on Android 17 that the team says finished ahead of schedule. The update introduces the Canvas image editor, updates to the Twelve music player and Jelly browser, and a revamped system updater that now uses streaming installation on A/B devices and automatically updates the recovery partition. The project also launched a WebUSB browser-based flashing tool at flash.lineageos.org, with initial support for Amlogic’s Burn protocol and Samsung’s Odin protocol. Security patches now cover bulletins from August 2025 through October 2026 across branches 18.1 to 24.0. Meanwhile, official support for the Pixel 6 series ends in October 2026, while Pixel 8 and newer devices carry a seven-year update commitment; third-party ROMs can only provide partial security coverage since they lack OEM firmware, kernel, and vendor code updates.

    Key Elements
LineageOS Releases Changelog 32 Ahead of 10th Anniversary: Rebased on Android 17, Adds Browser-Based Flashing

The well-known third-party Android system project LineageOS has released a major update, versioned as Changelog 32, just ahead of its 10th anniversary. The new release is rebuilt on Android 17, which Google shipped in June, and the project team unusually noted that “this year it came early.” The update also introduces a WebUSB browser-based flashing tool, eliminating the need for users to download separate flashing software.

The LineageOS project will mark its 10th anniversary on December 24, 2026. Changelog 32, titled “Getting Sentimental,” rebases the official system onto Android 17. The team noted that thanks to continuous adaptation to Google’s large-scale system refactoring across multiple prior versions, this rebase was completed far faster than expected.

Alongside the underlying system upgrade, LineageOS’s bundled app family has received a round of concentrated updates. The brand-new Canvas image editor officially debuts, covering basic functions such as cropping, white balance, and filters, forming a complete imaging toolkit alongside the existing Glimpse gallery and Aperture camera.

The Twelve music player fixes a long-standing issue where audio would freeze when offload was enabled, and improves Jellyfin support; the interface now highlights “Most played” albums and genres. The Jelly browser gains PWA-like capabilities through the shortcut mechanism. SetupWizard has been restructured with a revamped onboarding flow, while also reserving hooks for device maintainers to insert custom pages.

    System Update Mechanism Optimized

Changes to the Updater have the most direct impact on users of older devices. On A/B-partitioned devices, update downloads now default to streaming installation, noticeably reducing install time; on non-A/B devices, the recovery partition is automatically updated during the reboot following a successful update, eliminating manual steps. Additionally, the entire system UI has adopted a Material 3 Expressive visual redesign, with targeted layout adjustments for tablets and TVs.

    WebUSB Browser Flashing Tool Launches

The most notable addition on the developer side is a new tool: the official browser-based flashing solution is now live at flash.lineageos.org, with initial support for Amlogic’s Burn protocol and Samsung’s Odin protocol. This means users can communicate with USB devices directly through the browser to complete flashing, bypassing the need to download standalone flashing software.

LineageOS made clear that this tool does not replace the existing installation guides on the Wiki; it simply offers an additional path for users willing to simplify the process. Actual usability depends on device model, browser, and USB connection conditions.

    Engineering and Security Progress

Engineering is also accelerating. The continuous integration (CI) system now casts CI+1 or CI-1 votes on most application repositories and other core repositories, running pre-commit checks, linting, formatting checks, and REUSE license compliance verification; continuous delivery (CD) pushes artifacts such as APKs generated from each merged build directly to GitHub Actions.

On the security front, branches 18.1 through 24.0 have merged all security bulletins from August 2025 through October 2026; legacy branches 15.1, 16.0, and 17.1 have also caught up to November 2025, though several patches from the December bulletin remain extremely difficult to backport and still require community submissions to Gerrit. The accessibility (a11y) project also completed a free accessibility audit for LineageOS, covering everything from the installation flow to the app suite, and provided training for more than 40 contributors.

Update Status for Older Pixel Devices

This LineageOS release coincides with renewed attention on Google Pixel series update cycles. Under the commitment Google made in 2023 alongside the Pixel 8 launch, Pixel phones released thereafter receive seven years of software updates—not just regular security patches, but also major OS version upgrades.

Support timelines vary significantly across Pixel models. Support for the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro ends in October 2026; final updates for the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro arrive by the end of October 2027; the Pixel 6a stops receiving support in July 2027, while the Pixel 7a extends to May 2028.

Pixel Model Launch Date Support End Date Commitment
    Pixel 6 / 6 Pro October 2021 October 2026 5 years
    Pixel 7 / 7 Pro October 2022 October 2027 5 years
    Pixel 8 / 8 Pro October 2023 October 2030 7 years
    Pixel 8a May 2024 May 2031 7 years
    Pixel 9 / 9 Pro Aug–Sep 2024 Aug–Sep 2031 7 years
    Pixel 9a April 2025 April 2032 7 years
    Pixel 10 / 10 Pro August 2025 August 2032 7 years

Note: Support start dates are based on the month each model became available on the US Google Store.

The Security Limits of Third-Party ROMs

For Pixel devices past their official support window, installing a third-party ROM is a fallback option for some users, but security coverage is incomplete. Take the privacy-focused GrapheneOS (locked bootloader) and LineageOS (unlocked bootloader) as examples: neither can obtain original equipment manufacturer (OEM) firmware, kernel, or vendor code updates, so the patches they push can only cover security issues at the Linux kernel and framework level, not full security protection.

LineageOS currently still supports the original Pixel released in 2016, as well as nearly every Pixel model since. However, it’s worth noting that because these devices run on an unlocked bootloader, apps with strict verified boot requirements—such as banking apps, mobile wallets, and games with anti-cheat mechanisms—will not function properly.

LineageOS completing the Android 17 rebase ahead of schedule signals that the project has built a mature adaptation capability for handling Google’s large-scale system refactoring, which should help shorten the lag time for future version follow-ups. The WebUSB flashing tool lowers the barrier to entry for flashing and may attract more mainstream users to try third-party systems, though device compatibility and security remain variables that require ongoing attention.

For users still on Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series devices, the official support window is narrowing. While LineageOS can extend some security updates, it cannot replace full OEM-level protection. Once official support expires, users will still need to weigh the trade-offs between security and convenience when deciding whether to keep using the device, upgrade to a new one, or flash a third-party system.
