If iOS 27.0.1 appears first, your iOS 26 update may still be available.

Tap iOS 26.7.1, check the version on its detail screen, then choose Download and Install.
Installing 26.7.1 keeps you on iOS 26 and applies its security fix; you do not have to select iOS 27.

Where is the iOS 26.7.1 update when iOS 27 appears first?
On October 8, 2026, MacRumors reported that Apple had changed the order of the two update choices for iPhones still on iOS 26. The large, prominent option now shows iOS 27.0.1. The iOS 26.7.1 choice appears lower down under Also Available. A more prominent upgrade prompt does not mean the iOS 26 path has been removed.
Find the smaller update option
- Connect to Wi-Fi and open Settings → General → Software Update.
- Wait for the update check to finish. Scroll past the prominent iOS 27.0.1 card.
- Look for Also Available near the bottom, then select iOS 26.7.1.
- Confirm the version on the detail screen, back up your iPhone, and tap Download and Install.
Read the version number before tapping an install button. The location and wording may vary by device, region or a later Apple update.
Can you stay on iOS 26 without upgrading to iOS 27?
Yes, if your iPhone is still running iOS 26 and Apple offers iOS 26.7.1 to it. Select the 26.7.1 entry under Also Available. That is an update within iOS 26, while 27.0.1 is the separate major-version upgrade. Apple says iOS 26.7.1 provides security fixes. Its security advisory describes a CoreGraphics fix and says it is aware of a report of highly targeted exploitation on versions before iOS 27. If you plan to remain on iOS 26, leaving the phone on an older unpatched build is a separate decision from declining iOS 27.

Review Settings → General → Software Update → Automatic Updates. You can manage automatic download and installation, then choose the specific update manually. This is a general update control, not an iOS 26-only switch. Keep checking for security releases while you wait.
Why is iOS 26.7.1 missing from Also Available?
First distinguish a hidden choice from an update that is genuinely unavailable. The following checks are safer than repeatedly tapping the iOS 27 upgrade card.
- Check the installed version: Go to Settings → General → About → iOS Version. If it already says 26.7.1, there is nothing to install. If it says 27.x, 26.7.1 is an older-version update and will not be offered as a normal update.
- Finish the update check: Return to Software Update, wait for the page to load, scroll all the way down, then restart the iPhone and check again.
- Check the connection: Use a reliable Wi-Fi network. If the check errors, temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy and retry; Apple notes these can interfere with update-server access.
- Check Beta Updates: In Software Update, review Beta Updates. If the phone is enrolled in a beta, switch beta updates off and check again for public releases. This may change the offered channel, but does not guarantee a particular older build.
- Check for management restrictions: A work or school iPhone may receive updates on an organization’s schedule. Contact its administrator if the expected public choices never appear.

What if the phone shows only iOS 27 after those checks?
Do not assume a computer update will let you pick iOS 26.7.1. Finder or Apple Devices may offer the current supported software rather than the older version you want. Avoid installing a downloaded firmware file solely because a website calls it a way to “stay on iOS 26.”
Confirm your iPhone model and installed iOS version, then revisit Software Update later or contact Apple Support about the version currently offered for that device. Apple can change which builds it makes available. If you have already installed iOS 27, the normal Software Update path will not take you back to 26.7.1.
Is Apple forcing me to install iOS 27?
