In this step-by-step tutorial, we show you how to use Siri AI on your iPhone or iPad running iOS 27 or iPadOS 27 to write messages, notes, and thoughts in Apple and supported third-party apps.
When you open the typing box in Messages, Notes, Reminders, Mail, as well as some third-party apps like SimpleNote and Edison Mail, you’ll see the ‘Write with Siri’ option at the top of the keyboard. It later changes to the Siri icon once you start typing.
While I find this invasive and unnecessary and have created a whole separate tutorial on how to get rid of this feature entirely, if you already use AI tools like ChatGPT or Grok to write or frame your sentences, you now also have the option to do that right in most iOS apps, all without leaving it.
As the name suggests, this feature uses Apple’s Siri AI to write or rewrite based on your prompt. You can also ask it to edit, proofread, check grammar, or format your existing text, like turning it into bullet points.
Write with Siri in iOS 27
1) Make sure Siri AI is set up on your iPhone or iPad running iOS 27 or iPadOS 27.
2) Open Messages, Notes, Mail, or another Apple or supported third-party app.
3) Tap the main typing box. For instance, if you’re in Mail, tapping the address field will rightly not show the ‘Write with Siri’ option, but tapping the main text body will.
4) Tap Write with Siri.
5) The Siri interface will appear at the top of the screen. Type here or tap the microphone button and speak. Ask it something like ‘Write a sentence/few sentences/a paragraph thanking them for inviting me to dinner last night.’
Note: I found that if you say ‘Write me a message’ instead of ‘Write a few sentences,’ Siri may stupidly ask ‘who do you want to send this message to’ even though you’ll be on the conversation screen with the person you want to send the text to.
6) Once Siri generates the text, it should pop in automatically in the relevant text field. Review it, and if it looks good, tap X to close the ‘Rewrite’ box, hide it, and return to your typing field.
7) In case you don’t like the generated text, use the ‘Edit with Siri’ option and ask Siri to make the necessary changes.
Rewrite existing text using Siri AI
1) Open the typing field in a text box and type something. Or select existing text in a note or email body.
2) Tap the small Siri icon in the top-left corner of the keyboard.
3) Describe your change or tap the microphone icon and speak. You can say something like ‘Expand on it, make it formal/friendly, make it lengthy, shorten this text,’ and so on.
4) Siri will make the change and replace your existing text:
- If you need further changes, tap Edit with Siri.
- Tap the left curved arrow icon in the bottom right corner to switch back to the original text. And then tap the right curved arrow icon to switch to the AI-written version.
- Tap the comparison icon to see the original and the current AI-rewritten versions.
Write with Siri is the same as the Writing Tools option introduced with iOS 18, but now packaged in a way that’s always in your face as soon as you begin typing.
The feature works fine, but the implementation is extremely poor in the first version of iOS 27, based on my experience. For example:
- Taking a screenshot of this screen frequently makes the whole thing disappear, with no way to recover it.
- Tapping the comparison icon shows the original and rewritten text, but then there is no way to return to the previous screen, and tapping ‘X’ or swiping down closes everything. Worse, you won’t see the option to recover what was written/generated up to that point.
- And most annoyingly, if you ask Siri to rewrite something, the keyboard and entire interface may disappear or appear as a black box. And what you typed or what Siri wrote for you will be gone.
I hope Apple will fix these in upcoming iOS 27 updates.
