In this brief tutorial, we show you how to stop getting the file and folder naming suggestions that appear when you are manually renaming files on Mac.
macOS 27 and iOS 27 add several AI tools, like the ability to create Safari extensions and Siri shortcuts just by describing them. You can also extend and reframe photos.
In addition, macOS 27 adds a name suggestion option that shows one, two, or a few possible names when you’re renaming a file or folder in Finder. These appear in a small “Suggested” popup, as shown in the screenshot below.
I have been using macOS 27 since the first developer beta, and I don’t like these name suggestions at all. This is because most of the time, I already have a name in mind and don’t want suggestions. Secondly, the AI-suggested names aren’t always correct or relevant.
On top of that, these possible names don’t always show up instantly; I may be in the middle of renaming a file manually when the suggestions appear, breaking my flow.
Finally, on more than a dozen occasions, I have accidentally selected these suggested names when I was in a hurry. And on some occasions, I even mistakenly replaced the name I had carefully typed manually.
For these reasons, I don’t want naming suggestions to ever appear when I’m renaming the files and folders on my MacBook running macOS 27 Golden Gate. Thankfully, disabling it is extremely easy.
Turn off file and folder naming suggestions in macOS 27
- Open Finder on your Mac.
- Click Finder > Settings from the top menu bar or press the Command
+ ,
(comma) keys. - Make sure you’re in the General tab and uncheck “Suggest file names.”
The feature description reads: “Suggested names when renaming, saving, and editing files are based on file content and the names of other files in the folder.”
AI will no longer suggest names in Finder on this Mac. Repeat this on other Macs where you don’t want this feature to stay active.
If you still see naming suggestions, relaunch Finder or restart your Mac.
