Verizon has announced a strategic partnership with Google Cloud.

The agreement will see the US telecoms giant expand the use of Gemini Enterprise; modernize enterprise data; and scale AI across customer service, network operations, marketing, and employee workflows.

For CX leaders, the headline is less about another cloud partnership and more about where Verizon is placing its bets.

The carrier is using AI to handle a larger share of everyday customer interactions while reserving human support for the moments that are more complicated, sensitive, or likely to damage loyalty.

In discussing the news, Alfonso Villanueva, Verizon Chief Transformation Officer and EVP of Verizon Consumer, said:

“Serving each and every one of our customers by name requires working AI-first at every level.

“Our partnership leverages Google Cloud’s AI and data capabilities across our organization to better enable our employees and keep our customers at the center of everything we do.”

Verizon’s promise reflects the direction of travel across the contact center market. Enterprises are no longer positioning conversational AI as a side project or a simple chatbot deflection tool; increasingly, it is becoming part of the operating model.

Gemini Enterprise Takes a Bigger Role in Verizon CX

Verizon has already worked with Google Cloud on contact center technology, but the partnership is now evolving around Gemini Enterprise for Customer Experience.

According to the official announcement, the platform handles the majority of Verizon’s inbound consumer calls and chats each month across digital touchpoints.

That is a significant scale claim, particularly in an industry where customers often contact service teams during high-friction moments, from billing disputes and device issues to outages and account changes.

The apparent aim is to give customers faster answers for routine requests while allowing customer care representatives to focus on high-touch cases.

If automated journeys are poorly connected to customer data, they can simply make service feel harder to navigate.

Customers do not care whether an AI agent or a human resolves their problem. They care about whether the interaction is quick, accurate, and does not force them to repeat themselves.

This is where Verizon’s wider data modernization effort could become important. Google Cloud said the carrier has spent several years consolidating legacy data lakes into its Agentic Data Cloud, creating what it describes as a single

For contact centers, that could help AI agents and human advisors access a more complete view of the customer, their products, recent interactions, and potential service issues.

Of course, a unified data foundation does not automatically guarantee a better experience. It still depends on governance, knowledge quality, escalation design, and whether the organization can keep AI responses accurate as policies and products change.

From Customer Service to Network Experience

The partnership also reaches beyond the contact center.

Verizon is building an autonomous network intelligence framework with Google Cloud as a data platform partner. The goal is to predict and resolve network anomalies before they affect customers.

Indeed, if AI can identify a likely network issue, notify affected customers proactively, and offer clear next steps before call volumes spike, it could reduce pressure on service teams while protecting trust.

Google Cloud’s Karthik Narain, Chief Product and Business Officer, described the broader ambition as a “true, full-scale AI transformation.

“By integrating Google Cloud’s full AI stack into its business, from high-performance infrastructure and Gemini models to custom business agents, they are reshaping the future of telecommunications and building an autonomous network for millions of customers.”

For now, the partnership signals that the telecoms provider sees customer experience as a central proving ground for its AI-first strategy, not merely a cost-saving exercise.
